Yanks, Rays keep up pace

Luis Severino dominated over seven innings, Didi Gregorius and Todd Frazier homered, and the Yankees beat the Cincinnati Reds, 9-5, yesterday in New York to sweep the two-game interleagu­e series.

The Yankees have won 6-of-8, and remain a game behind the first-place Red Sox in the AL East.

Severino (7-4) did not allow a runner past second base until the seventh. He struck out nine, eight swinging, many on a devastatin­g slider that looked untouchabl­e at times.

Cubs 8, White Sox 3 — Jake Arrieta pitched twohit ball into the seventh, and the Cubs beat the host White Sox to move into first in the NL Central.

Anthony Rizzo had three hits and four RBI, helping the Cubs improve to 10-2 since the All-Star break.

Marlins 22, Rangers 10 — In Arlington, Texas, Marlins leadoff hitter Dee Gordon homered on the first pitch thrown by Yu Darvish, and things got no better for Texas as Miami set a franchise record for runs in a blowout win, with Giancarlo Stanton blasting his majors-leading 33rd homer.

Phillies 9, Astros 0 — Cameron Rupp hit two home runs and Aaron Nola set a career high with 10 strikeouts over six innings to lead host Philadelph­ia to a shutout of Houston.

American League

Rays 5, Orioles 1 — Evan Longoria and Steven Souza Jr. homered and Alex Cobb pitched seven strong innings for Tampa Bay in a win over Baltimore in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The win kept the Rays 21⁄ games behind the Red Sox in the AL East.

Longoria’s two-run shot off Baltimore starter Ubaldo Jimenez, his 15th of the season, put Tampa Bay up 2-1 in the sixth after a walk to Mallex Smith.

Blue Jays 3, Athletics 2 — Justin Smoak hit a gametying two-run homer in the ninth inning and Kendrys Morales followed with a game-winning blast as host Toronto rallied to beat struggling Oakland.

Indians 10, Angels 4 — Rookie Bradley Zimmer homered and drove in the go-ahead run with a seventh-inning double and host Cleveland beat Los Angeles to match a season high with its sixth straight win.

Royals 16, Tigers 2 — Eric Hosmer matched his career high with five hits, including his first major league grand slam, and visiting Kansas City beat Detroit to extend its winning streak to a season-best eight games.

National League

Nationals 8, Brewers 5 — Ryan Zimmerman and Adam Lind each had tworun doubles in a seven-run eighth inning to help host Washington rally past Milwaukee.

Bryce Harper was ejected in the eighth for arguing strikes, but his first-inning single extended his hitting streak to a career-high 18 games.

Before the game, the Brewers acquired reliever Anthony Swarzak in a trade with the White Sox.

Diamondbac­ks 10, Braves 3— In Phoenix, J.D. Martinez homered twice and Ketel Marte hit an inside-thepark two-run homer to help Arizona rout Atlanta.

Giants 2, Pirates 1— Brandon Belt doubled in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the seventh in support of starter Jeff Samardzija, who threw seven strong innings, as host San Francisco beat Pittsburgh.

Cardinals 10, Rockies 5 — Paul DeJong homered and Randal Grichuk had a career-high four hits as host St. Louis completed a threegame sweep of Colorado.

After the game, the Rockies acquired All-Star reliever Pat Neskek from the Phillies for three minor leaguers — infielder Jose Gomez, and pitchers J.D. Hammer and Alejandro Requena.
