Teacher ID’d as bicyclist killed in collision with car
A teacher described as “one of the truly great people our school district has ever known” was identified yesterday as the bicyclist who was struck and killed by a vehicle Friday while riding on Route 20 in Charlton, authorities said.
Charlton Middle School teacher John Paire was the victim of the 3:30 p.m. crash, according to a letter sent to parents and faculty members yesterday by Dudley-Charlton Regional School District Superintendent Gregg J. Desto.
“By now, many of you are already aware of the tragic news that we have lost one of the truly great people our school district has ever known,” Desto wrote. “John Paire, longtime administrator at Dudley Middle School, current teacher at Charlton Middle School and a dear friend to many of us, was killed in a tragic accident while riding his bicycle yesterday. John was one of the true champions of the ‘students first’ philosophy that permeates our district. Every decision he made was with the best interest of the kids in mind.”
In a statement on the department’s Facebook page, Charlton police said the crash occurred near Sturbridge and South Sturbridge roads, just west of Route 169.
The driver of the car that hit Paire remained at the scene of the accident and is cooperating with investigators, police said.
