WHO'S OUT THERE?

Brad Ausmus

Age: 48 Currently: Recently fired by Tigers Previous experience: Padres special assistant (2010-13); Tigers manager (2014-17) Skinny: After winning just 64 games this season, why would the Red Sox consider him a candidate? It was Dombrowski who hired him in Detroit, so there's a clear history between the two. He also won 90 games back when he still had a Tigers roster in its prime. Question is, how does Dombrowski feel about Ausmus these days? Also, how do Rick Porcello and David Price feel about him? They each played for him in Detroit. Dombrowski stated a general preference for candidates with experience, and Ausmus certainly has that.

Alex Cora

Age: 41 Currently: Astros bench coach (2017) Previous experience: WBC Team Puerto Rico GM

Skinny: Despite limited bench experience, Cora's among the most popular managerial candidates in baseball. He was a key factor building the clubhouse culture in Houston. “He's very sharp, sees the game in an extraordinarily deep way,” Astros manager A.J. Hinch said. “Has really connected well with players in our clubhouse and spent a lot of time developing relationships and being the bench coach liaison to the clubhouse that I asked him to be.”

Sandy Alomar Jr.

Age: 51 Currently: Indians first base coach (2013-present) Previous experience: Mets catching instructor (2008-09); Indians third base/bench coach (2010-2012)

Skinny: Alomar has regularly interviewed for managerial openings, including the Red Sox' job in 2011. The New York Post has already reported that Alomar has received “strong consideration” to interview for the Mets managerial opening. Alomar is basically considered a contender for any managerial job that comes open these days.

Bob Geren

Age: 56 Currently: Dodgers bench coach (2016-present) Previous experience: Athletics coach (2003-06); Athletics manager (2007-11); Mets bench coach (201215)

Skinny: Back in the late '90s, he managed in the Red Sox minor league system. He's most recently been the bench coach for successful teams in New York — he was on the bench when the Mets went to the World Series in 2015 — and Los Angeles, where the Dodgers have already advanced to the NLCS. Geren could be a candidate to return to the Mets to fill their managerial vacancy. If the Red Sox are interested, the Mets opening could be a hurdle.

Gary DiSarcina

Age: 49 Currently: Red Sox bench coach (2017) Previous experience: Angels first base/third base coach (2014-16)

Skinny: Born and raised in the Boston area, his ties to the Red Sox organization run deep as he managed four years in the minor league system. He also knows the clubhouse and prides himself on an ability to communicate with players. Impossible to ignore such an internal candidate, though Dombrowski minimized the chances of a Red Sox coach getting the job.
