As a horrific school shooting unfolded in Parkland, Fla., President Trump took to Twitter to offer his condolences to the families of those who were killed and wounded.

“My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims in the terrible Florida shooting,” Trump wrote in a tweet shortly after students and teachers were gunned down inside the freshman building at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. “No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school.”

Trump also tweeted that he spoke with Florida Gov. Rick Scott and was “working closely with law enforcement” in the wake of the mass shooting.

The White House said that during their conversation, Trump offered Scott any federal assistance he needed.

First lady Melania Trump also offered her condolences on Twitter, writing, “My heart is heavy over the school shooting in Florida. Keeping all affected in my thoughts & prayers.”
