Immigration deal doable

Boston Herald - - NEWS -

There is no bigger failure by the Democrats than that on immigration (“Trump complicates ‘Dreamer’ debate,” Feb. 12).

What President Trump has offered is quite amazing and reasonable.

In his State of the Union speech, Trump went beyond just the immigrants that are already part of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, some 800,000. He offered a path to citizenship for 1.8 million young immigrants who could qualify for the DACA program.

Trump also proposes to:

• End the diversity “lottery,” which is based in part on chance.

• Limit “chain immigration” to the nuclear family.

• Further secure the U.S. southern border with billions of dollars in funding for his “wall.”

These proposals are reasonable and could appeal on a bipartisan basis.
