AP knocks off St. Mary’s to win CCL title
Austin Prep clinched the Catholic Central League boys hockey title last night with a 6-1 rout of reigning Division 1 champion St. Mary’s in Lynn.
“It was good to see the kids respond to a big game,” first-year AP coach Bill Pappas said. “It’s good to see that they’ve got that in them.”
Austin Prep (11-6-1) took the lead just 1:53 into the contest on a goal by Nicholas Cafarelli (goal, two assists). The Spartans (11-4-4) evened the score at 5:40 as Jaiden Moriello put home a rebound, but the Cougars took the lead for good with 3:02 to go in the first on a Kevin Urquhart power-play redirect.
Matthew Sacco extended the lead to 3-1 at 2:26 of the second period, and Dylan Arnold, Richard Lyons and Evan Rago added goals in the third to close out the scoring.
“I think it was a great game overall for these guys,” Pappas said.
Hopkinton (15-2-1) won the TriValley League championship for the first time with a 2-0 shutout of Medway that featured Dylan O’Leary’s 22 saves and power-play goals from Will Abbott and D.J. Sloan.
Freshman Aaron Zenus netted the first two goals for Masconomet (9-4-3) in a 7-2 nonleague rout of Peabody . ... Andrew Miller scored both goals and Kyle Penton made 28 saves for Waltham (13-3-2) in a 2-0 shutout of Lincoln-Sudbury.
Another Catholic Central League title was decided in Lynn, and again it was Austin Prep (17-0-1) coming out on top with a 4-2 victory against St. Mary’s, a win powered by first-period goals by Alexandra Santostefano, 54 seconds in, Kara Cecchini and Felicia Zuccola.
“When we really come to play, we can be relentless offensively,” Cougars coach Stephanie Wood said. “It was definitely one of our goals to win the CCL and we were lucky to do that.”
After the Spartans made it a 3-2 game, Hanna Aveni (16 saves) held strong in the third period and Kendra Currier added an empty-netter.
In nonleague action, eighthgrader Olivia Tuffy’s hat trick helped Ursuline (7-10-1) top Cohasset/Hanover, 4-2 . ... Ali Delmonte turned away 23 shots in her eighth shutout as Archbishop Williams (124-1) downed Dennis-Yarmouth, 4-0.
Khai Smith poured in 26 points while picking up 16 rebounds, and Cambridge (15-2) took down Worcester North, 66-54, in a nonleague matchup.
Mike Spencer collected 23 points and 10 rebounds as Cardinal Spellman (14-6) upended Archbishop Williams, 73-46, in the Catholic Central League.
Matignon (17-0) was paced by Korine Haidul’s 16 points in a 6939 nonleague rout of Notre Dame Cristo Rey . ... Lauren Keleher had 12 points and 10 boards, and Abington (12-8) beat Brockton, 42-30.
In the Bay State Conference, Elizabeth Davis poured in 22 points to boost Newton North (10-7) to a 52-38 win against Needham.
