AP knocks off St. Mary’s to win CCL ti­tle

Austin Prep clinched the Catholic Cen­tral League boys hockey ti­tle last night with a 6-1 rout of reign­ing Di­vi­sion 1 cham­pion St. Mary’s in Lynn.

“It was good to see the kids re­spond to a big game,” first-year AP coach Bill Pap­pas said. “It’s good to see that they’ve got that in them.”

Austin Prep (11-6-1) took the lead just 1:53 into the con­test on a goal by Ni­cholas Ca­farelli (goal, two as­sists). The Spartans (11-4-4) evened the score at 5:40 as Jaiden Moriello put home a re­bound, but the Cougars took the lead for good with 3:02 to go in the first on a Kevin Urquhart power-play re­di­rect.

Matthew Sacco ex­tended the lead to 3-1 at 2:26 of the sec­ond pe­riod, and Dy­lan Arnold, Richard Lyons and Evan Rago added goals in the third to close out the scor­ing.

“I think it was a great game over­all for these guys,” Pap­pas said.

Hop­kin­ton (15-2-1) won the TriVal­ley League cham­pi­onship for the first time with a 2-0 shutout of Med­way that fea­tured Dy­lan O’Leary’s 22 saves and power-play goals from Will Ab­bott and D.J. Sloan.

Fresh­man Aaron Zenus net­ted the first two goals for Mas­conomet (9-4-3) in a 7-2 non­league rout of Pe­abody . ... An­drew Miller scored both goals and Kyle Pen­ton made 28 saves for Waltham (13-3-2) in a 2-0 shutout of Lin­coln-Sud­bury.

Girls hockey

An­other Catholic Cen­tral League ti­tle was de­cided in Lynn, and again it was Austin Prep (17-0-1) com­ing out on top with a 4-2 victory against St. Mary’s, a win pow­ered by first-pe­riod goals by Alexan­dra San­toste­fano, 54 se­conds in, Kara Cec­chini and Feli­cia Zuc­cola.

“When we re­ally come to play, we can be re­lent­less of­fen­sively,” Cougars coach Stephanie Wood said. “It was def­i­nitely one of our goals to win the CCL and we were lucky to do that.”

After the Spartans made it a 3-2 game, Hanna Aveni (16 saves) held strong in the third pe­riod and Ken­dra Cur­rier added an empty-net­ter.

In non­league ac­tion, eighth­grader Olivia Tuffy’s hat trick helped Ur­su­line (7-10-1) top Co­has­set/Hanover, 4-2 . ... Ali Del­monte turned away 23 shots in her eighth shutout as Arch­bishop Williams (124-1) downed Den­nis-Yar­mouth, 4-0.

Boys bas­ket­ball

Khai Smith poured in 26 points while pick­ing up 16 re­bounds, and Cam­bridge (15-2) took down Worces­ter North, 66-54, in a non­league matchup.

Mike Spencer col­lected 23 points and 10 re­bounds as Car­di­nal Spell­man (14-6) up­ended Arch­bishop Williams, 73-46, in the Catholic Cen­tral League.

Girls bas­ket­ball

Matignon (17-0) was paced by Korine Haidul’s 16 points in a 6939 non­league rout of Notre Dame Cristo Rey . ... Lau­ren Kele­her had 12 points and 10 boards, and Abington (12-8) beat Brock­ton, 42-30.

In the Bay State Con­fer­ence, El­iz­a­beth Davis poured in 22 points to boost Newton North (10-7) to a 52-38 win against Need­ham.
