Look­ing for a nat­u­ral al­ter­na­tive to chem­i­cal sprays? Moun­tain Rose Herbs of­fers this recipe for mak­ing your own in­sect re­pel­lent from es­sen­tial oils— es­pe­cially cat­nip, which the company says can be as ef­fec­tive as chem­i­cals in de­ter­ring pesky mos­qui­toes. If you have fresh cat­nip in your gar­den, you can use a high-al­co­hol tinc­ture in­stead of hy­drosol.


8 ounces or­ganic cat­nip hy­drosol 20 drops or­ganic cedar­wood es­sen­tial oil 20 drops or­ganic lavender es­sen­tial oil 10 drops or­ganic lemon­grass es­sen­tial oil

10 drops or­ganic le­mon es­sen­tial oil


Slowly drip each es­sen­tial oil into the hy­drosol, count­ing with care as you go. Mix all in­gre­di­ents in the bot­tle by shak­ing vig­or­ously. Shake well be­fore each use and reap­ply as of­ten as needed.
