Curtis plays big role in Mercer’s win over Catamounts

Several former local football standouts have gone on to the next level to play college football and many are making an impact for their teams this season.

More than 30 players that graduated from either Calhoun, Gordon Central or Sonoravill­e can be found on college football rosters throughout the nation, and several of those saw action in their team’s most recent game.

Here’s a roundup of the former local players who appeared in the box score and how they did last week:

CHANDLER CURTIS, Mercer, Calhoun

Curtis had a big day with four catches for 96 yards and a touchdown in the Bears’ 38-24 home win over Western Carolina on Saturday. The junior receiver also had three kickoff returns for a total of 71 yards, one punt return for eight yards and one rush for 12 yards.

ADAM GRIFFITH, Alabama, Calhoun

Griffith was 7-for-7 on extra points in the Crimson Tide’s 49-10 win at Tennessee on Saturday. The redshirt-senior kicker missed a 37-yard field goal, but also handled kickoff duties, averaging 63 yards per kick on eight attempts with four touchbacks. Along with two teammates, he was named the Special Teams Player of the Week by the Alabama coaching staff.

TAYLOR LAMB, Appalachia­n State, Calhoun

Lamb threw for 201 yards on 15-of-26 passing with a touchdown and an intercepti­on in the Mountainee­rs’ 24-0 win at Louisiana-LaFayette last Wednesday. The redshirt-junior quarterbac­k also had six yards on the ground.

TRISTAN FULLER, Sewanee, Calhoun

Fuller had two solo and one assisted tackle for a total of three in the Tigers’ 34-6 loss at Washington (Mo.) on Saturday. The sophomore linebacker also had a forced fumble.

THOMAS LESTER, West Georgia, Calhoun

Lester, a sophomore receiver, had two catches for 30 yards in the Wolves’ 31-7 home loss to West Alabama on Saturday.

SEBASTIAN WILLER, Georgia State, Calhoun

Willer, a redshirt-junior, started at right tackle for the Panthers in their 31-21 loss at Troy on Saturday.

MATT EDGAR, Lindsey Wilson, Sonoravill­e

Edgar, a senior kicker and holder, successful­ly held on all three extra points in the Blue Raiders’ 21-14 win at Faulkner on Saturday as they moved to 7-0 on the season. They are currently ranked No. 6 in the country in the NAIA as they head into a huge home matchup on Saturday at No. 3 and undefeated Reinhardt.

BLAINE ANDERSON, Shorter, Calhoun

Anderson, a freshman defensive lineman, had one solo tackle in the Hawks’ 45-0 loss at North Alabama last Saturday.

TRENT FRIX, Georgia, Calhoun

The junior long snapper Frix participat­ed but didn’t record any stats in the Bulldogs’ 17-16 loss at home to Vanderbilt on Saturday.

DJ PRATHER, Chattanoog­a, Gordon Central

Prather, a redshirt-junior defensive lineman, participat­ed but didn’t record any stats in the Mocs’ 22-14 loss at The Citadel on Saturday.

DREW McCRACKEN, Kennesaw State, Calhoun

The sophomore long snapper McCracken participat­ed but didn’t record any stats in the Owls’ 36-21 loss at home to Liberty on Saturday.

NATHANIEL SMITH, Dakota College at Bottineau, Sonoravill­e

Smith, a freshman defensive back, participat­ed but didn’t record any stats in the Dakota’s 28-21 win at Mesabi Range on Saturday.
