From college reports

The Georgia Highlands baseball team hosted Three Rivers Community College in a three game series this weekend at LakePoint in Emerson, their final series before starting GCAA play.

On Friday night, The Raiders came out firing on all cylinders, scoring three runs in the second inning off Charger starter Colby Taylor to take an early lead. After three innings of tough luck outs, the GHC offense finally broke through, scoring four runs and taking a lead they would never relinquish.

From fourth inning on Friday night through the rest of the series, the Chargers would outscore the Raiders 27-0 the rest of the way. Colby Taylor earned his fifth win on the season, throwing 6.2 innings allowing three runs, one earned, on nine hits, one walk and four strikeouts. Sean Fitzpatrick, who entered the game with the score set at 6-3 with the bases loaded and two outs in the sixth. The sophomore lefty enticed a shallow fly out by the Raiders’ cleanup hitter to end the threat and then threw two more no-hit innings to end the game and earn the save.

Caleb McElwaney led the 12 hit GHC attack, going 3-5 with a double, three runs and three RBIs. Grant Bodison, Nick Piccapietra, and Nick Fink each tallied two hits of their own, combining to go 6-11 with five runs scored and four RBIs.

In Game 2, freshman right-hander Drew Wilson, a former Sonoraville High standout, became the Chargers’ all-time leader in complete games, notching his third of the season en route to a 5-0 shutout and his fifth win of the year. Wilson scattered five hits, walked one and struck out six batters in the ballgame. The Chargers provided five runs in support of Wilson, led by Isreal Zackery, who launched a home run deep to left field and drove in two runs on two hits for the day. Devin Bilardello, Grant Bodison, and Caleb McElwaney hammered out two hits apiece and played excellent defense in the victory.

The dam broke early in the third and final game of the weekend, as the Chargers scorched the Raiders for for runs in the first and then continued to add to the score in each inning until the game was ended via the mercy rule in the fifth. In total, the Chargers recorded 15 hits in the affair, including three off the bats of Jonathan White and Nick Piccapietra.

Though offense was the highlight of the game, Matthew Norton was pretty good as well, tossing a shutout of his own and keeping the Raider offense silent for the duration of the game. Norton claimed his fourth victory of the season in the effort and fanned two batters while surrendering only four hits.

Also of note was the defense of GHC left fielder Bronco O’Brien, who made two running grabs despite smashing into the fence in foul territory and another incredible diving grab in the left field corner.
