— No. 19 Reinhardt opened its home slate of games with an impressive victory over NCAA Division III Piedmont (Ga.) Tuesday night, as the Eagles prevented the Lions from getting into an offensive flow in a 63-41 win inside the Brown Athletic Center.

The Eagles ( 2- 0) held their visitors to 30 percent shooting (15-of-50), including just 3-of-15 from the charity stripe, while Ashton Sutton led the way on the offensive end with 15 points and four rebounds.

“I was pleased we could get a win in our home opener, especially against a very well- coached Piedmont team,” head coach Lindsey Huffman said. “I don’t think we performed up to our potential offensively tonight, but we were able to make up for that by crashing the offensive glass and knocking down our free throws.

“I liked our effort as team on both ends of the floor. Now, we just have to work harder at taking care of the ball and being more efficient on the offensive end.”

Former Sonoraville High standout Rebecca Cheeks would also score in double-digits with 12, while she pulled down six boards, second to only Jada Hubbard’s team-high of seven rebounds. Former Calhoun High standout Tess Wright also saw action in the game as she contributed three steals and three rebounds.

Reinhardt was able to bolt out to an early lead in the first quarter thanks to poor shooting from the Lions out of the gate, as they were only able to muster three baskets on 12 shot attempts. The Eagles only made four baskets in the first quarter as well, but were able to take advantage at the free throw line, making all 12 of their attempts.

Huffman’s squad would shoot better than 50 percent in the second quarter in route to a 38-17 advantage at the break. Both teams would make adjustments at halftime and come out in the third and play the most competitive stanza of the game.

Piedmont would take its turn shooting 50 percent from the floor to keep things close in the quarter, but watched as Reinhardt matched the scoring each step of the way. From there, neither team would be able to continue the momentum in the fourth period – as both squads combined for 11 points.

Collectively, the team shot 21-of-61, but was strong at the line with 17 makes in 19 chances (89.5 percent).

Reinhardt was on the road on Friday to visit Life University. They will then visit Brenau University on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Cheeks is coming off an incredible freshman year last season where she was named an NAIA All-American and the Appalachian Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year after averaging 16.1 points and 10.2 rebounds.
