Lady Jack­ets rally from early loss to win Fan­nin Tour­na­ment

De­spite a few hur­dles along the way, the Cal­houn Lady Jack­ets con­tin­ued their strong start to the sea­son on Satur­day as they once again were the last team stand­ing to take home a tour­na­ment ti­tle.

Cal­houn won the Rally on the Ridge Tour­na­ment at Fan­nin County High on Satur­day after a long day of vol­ley­ball and also over­came ill­ness and miss­ing play­ers to ac­com­plish the feat. It is their sec­ond tour­na­ment ti­tle in as many weeks as they won the At The Rock Tour­na­ment the pre­vi­ous Satur­day at Rock­mart High.

The Lady Jack­ets (151) started the day with a set­back on Satur­day, fall­ing to host Fan­nin County in two sets (2519, 25-21) for their first loss of the sea­son, but they used that as fuel to bounce back and go un­scathed the rest of the day. They de­feated Daw­son County in two sets (25-23, 25-13), Rabun County in three sets ( 18- 25, 25- 6, 15- 9) and Lump­kin County in two sets (25-18, 25-20) to close out pool play. They then de­feated Lump­kin County again in the semi­fi­nals in two sets (25-11, 25-13) and got their re­venge over Fan­nin County with a two- set ( 25- 8, 25- 17) vic­tory to claim the tour­na­ment ti­tle.

In the stats col­umn for Cal­houn on the day were Ash­lyn Br­zo­zoski with 88 digs, nine aces and two kills, Calli Edens with 15 digs, two aces and one kill, Anna Ge­orge with 51 kills, seven blocks, six aces and two digs, Anna Hoblitzell with 31 digs, six aces, six kills and one block, Erin Kelly with four kills, three aces, three digs and one block, Emma Led­ford with 29 digs, four aces and three kills, Nena Mar­cus with 20 kills, six aces, five blocks and two digs, Erin Paul with 14 digs, Emma Kate Smith with 42 digs, seven aces and four kills and So­phie Ste­wart with 13 kills, seven aces and three digs.

The Jack­ets played their first home matches on Tues­day when they hosted Model and Coahulla Creek. (For de­tails on those matches, see Satur­day’s Cal­houn Times.) They will be back at home on Thurs­day to host Pep­perell and Ring­gold for a tri-match start­ing at 5 p.m.

SOFT­BALL Cal­houn 11, LFO 0

The Lady Jack­ets’ bats came to life in a big way on Thurs­day as they put up a big num­ber on the score­board for a dom­i­nant re­gion road win.

Cal­houn (6-2, 4-2 in 6-AAA) led 1-0 after two in­nings but re­ally broke the game open with a six- run third and then put on the fin­ish­ing touches with a four-run sixth to force the mercy rule. Lead­ing the way at the plate was Au­drey Wil­banks, Car­lie Hen­der­son and Malysha Win­ston who all had three hits. Among their hits, Wil­banks had a dou­ble, an RBI and two runs scored, Hen­der­son had two RBIs and two runs scored and Win­ston had an RBI and a run scored.

Also con­tribut­ing at the plate was Erin Barnes with two hits and an RBI, Lyndi Rae Davis and Lona Sims with a hit and two RBIs apiece and Jor­dan Blair and Espee Reyes with a hit and an RBI apiece.

Mag­gie McBrayer had a great night in the circle as well for the Lady Jack­ets as she tossed a one-hit shutout and struck out seven in six in­nings of work to earn the win.

The Lady Jack­ets were back at home on Mon­day to host North Mur­ray and on the road at Mur­ray County on Tues­day. (For de­tails on those games, see Satur­day’s Cal­houn Times.) They will be back home on Thurs­day for a huge re­gion ri­valry matchup against Sono­rav­ille at 6:30 p.m.

Sono­rav­ille splits at Buc­ca­neer Bash

The Lady Phoenix opened the day with a tough loss for their first of the sea­son on Satur­day at the Al­la­toona Buc­ca­neer Bash at Ken­ne­saw Moun­tain High, but they bounced back to get a shutout win in their next game.

Sono­rav­ille ( 10- 1) dropped a 3-2 de­ci­sion to Alexan­der in their first game of the day in 10 in­nings. Kris­ten Davis took the tough-luck loss after toss­ing 9 2-3 in­nings and gave up three runs (all un­earned) on eight hits while strik­ing out six. At the plate, San­dra Beth Pritch­ett had three hits, in­clud­ing a dou­ble, and two RBIs, Grif­fin Holden and Shayna Dut­ton each had two hits and Kar­ley Thomas added a hit and a run scored.

The Lady Phoenix didn’t stay down long as they got back in the win col­umn later in the af­ter­noon with a 2-0 vic­tory over Cartersville. Tay­lor Long got the nod in the circle and went the dis­tance, toss­ing six in­nings of shutout ball, al­low­ing only one hit and strik­ing out 12 to earn the win.

Of­fen­sively in the win, Thomas had a hit, an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base to lead the way. Katie Wil­liams added a hit, two stolen bases and a run scored, and Grace Crocker, Davis, Long and Pritch­ett all con­trib­uted a hit apiece.

Sono­rav­ille was on the road on Tues­day at Ring­gold as they tried to re­main un­beaten in Re­gion 6-AAA play. (For de­tails on that game, see Satur­day’s Cal­houn Times.) They will visit ri­val Cal­houn on Thurs­day at 6:30 p.m.

Chat­tooga 9, Gor­don Cen­tral 1

The Lady War­riors fell be­hind early on Thurs­day and couldn’t catch up as they dropped a re­gion con­test at home.

Gor­don Cen­tral (5-7, 1-4 in 7-AA) cut Chat­tooga’s lead to 2-1 in the first in­ning, but the Lady In­di­ans added one in the sec­ond, two in the third and four in the fourth to put the game away.

Mor­gan Frank led the Lady War­riors’ of­fense with a hit and an RBI, and Ja­van Vine­yard added a dou­ble and a run scored. Jada Jaco, Cheyenne Tem­ple and Cara Crump also had a hit apiece.

Gor­don Cen­tral was on the road at Ar­muchee on Tues­day for an­other 7-AA matchup. (For de­tails on that game, see Satur­day’s Cal­houn Times.) They will host Rock­mart on Thurs­day at 5 p.m.

CROSS COUN­TRY Cal­houn, Gor­don Cen­tral runs at Ridge Ferry In­vi­ta­tional

Cal­houn and Gor­don Cen­tral trav­eled to Rome on Satur­day morn­ing to com­pete in the Ridge Ferry In­vi­ta­tional against a large and tal­ented field.

The Lady Jack­ets were the top fin­ish­ing team as they took fifth in the girls race with a score of 181 thanks to some strong in­di­vid­ual per­for­mances. Ash­ley Hart­ness led the way with a 12th-place fin­ish (20:13.34), and team­mate Mari Mo­rales wasn’t far be­hind in 22nd (21:15.22). Round­ing out the team score for Cal­houn was Anna Gibson (32nd, 21:57.74), Ash­ley Jaramillo (51st, 23:09.54) and Teresa Nguyen (69th, 23:55.97).

The Cal­houn boys fin­ished sixth in the team stand­ings with a score of 207. Felipe Bar­rios had a very strong day, fin­ish­ing ninth over­all with a time of 17:03.33. An­gel San­ti­ago was 37th with an 18:19.98, and Jonathan San­tana took 45th with an 18:31.72. Com­plet­ing the team score for the Jack­ets was Nestor Her­nan­dez (59th, 18:45.63) and Mario Mar­ro­quin (64th, 18:51.84).

The Gor­don Cen­tral girls were 21st in the team stand­ings. They were led by Jas­mine Ve­lasco who fin­ished 64th with a time of 23:38.06. Tay­lor Evans also fin­ishes 109th with a 24:49.95.

Gor­don Cen­tral will be back in ac­tion on Satur­day when they com­pete in the Run at the Rock at Wood­land High School at 8 a.m. Cal­houn’s next meet is the first North Ge­or­gia Cross Coun­try League meet at Ed­wards Park in Dal­ton on Sept. 6, and they will then com­pete in the Car­roll­ton Or­tho­pe­dic In­vi­ta­tional on Sept. 8.
