Copic Gray Fam­i­lies

Copic has a num­ber of col­ors to help you cre­ate black—46 to be ex­act. There are four dif­fer­ent gray color fam­i­lies in the Copic color line, each with a dif­fer­ent tone. Cool grays have a slightly blue un­der­tone. Neu­tral grays have a neu­tral un­der­tone (nei­ther blue nor brown). Toner grays have a slightly brown un­der­tone, and warm grays have a def­i­nite brown un­der­tone. Pick­ing the right gray fam­ily is the first step to col­or­ing an ob­ject black (Photo 1).

Once you pick a gray fam­ily, you can be­gin build­ing and lay­er­ing color to cre­ate your per­fect black. The fol­low­ing tu­to­rial is stepped out with in­for­ma­tion on how to cre­ate a gen­tly blended black that rep­re­sents a soft ma­te­rial as well as a high-con­trast look that rep­re­sents a shiny ma­te­rial.
