Copic Gray Families
Copic has a number of colors to help you create black—46 to be exact. There are four different gray color families in the Copic color line, each with a different tone. Cool grays have a slightly blue undertone. Neutral grays have a neutral undertone (neither blue nor brown). Toner grays have a slightly brown undertone, and warm grays have a definite brown undertone. Picking the right gray family is the first step to coloring an object black (Photo 1).
Once you pick a gray family, you can begin building and layering color to create your perfect black. The following tutorial is stepped out with information on how to create a gently blended black that represents a soft material as well as a high-contrast look that represents a shiny material.
