I wrote Sticks and Stones... because guidance of our children seems to be lacking and we are the ones responsible. It is a tool book to help guide those, especially teens and young adults, who are having a hard time fitting in with others, let alone into their own skins.
The questions help them sort through and discover solutions to their own problems. In truth, the reader completes the book themselves and chooses to share it or not. It is theirs to do with as they wish. Sharing the questions and personal answers helped Tammy's friends and others get through it all. Tammy was my step-daughter's schoolmate who hung herself at age fourteen. Kids were deeply affected and did not know what to do with the emotions Tammy's death caused. I wrote ninety-two questions, made copies which my daughter handed out to friends and acquaintances. In about a month, a stack of answers came back.
I cried a lot at the readings, learned so much about which I did not have a clue, and kept my promise to the kids. They asked me to burn them after I read them. I had told them I would show their answers to no one. But I have always remembered. After I read them, and many were signed as many were not, I burned them as most had asked me. There was a lot of fear going on in their young beings. Believe me, what they wrote was burned into my heart. Many told me that answering those questions had helped more than I would ever know. Things that they told me and that I experienced myself are in the pages of the book. Those who bully others to make themselves important, those who do not listen to another's story, those who do not take the time to act when it may be inconvenient are all those who hurt so many; that is another reason I wrote this book and have another on its way. Hopefully the next is a book will stand by itself. I want to help those who want and need help, too. I think this book can make a positive appeal to them. Maybe we can all help each other be the best of ourselves.
