Reserve FFA Excels
Over the last few months, FFA members across the state have been working hard writing and memorizing speeches to present at the District Public Speaking Contest for their district. Reserve FFA is part of NM FFA’s District VI which includes chapters from Deming, Las Cruces High School, Mayfield High School, Mesilla Valley Christian, Centennial High School, Cliff, Tularosa, and several other towns.
On November 10, junior high members from across District VI met in Deming to compete. In JR high, there are four contests that members can choose from: Illustrated Talk, Prepared Speech, Opening & Closing Ceremonies, and reciting the FFA Creed. Reserve sent seven members to compete. In individual events Poet James-Hovda competed in Prepared Speech, Creed, and Illustrated Talk; Darius DeLaO competed in Prepared Speech and Creed; and Dee Dee Rains competed in Prepared Speech and Creed. Darius DeLaO, Cade Livingston, Makayla Hinton, Kayden Marshall, Adrian Varela, Poet James-Hovda, and Dee Dee Rains competed as a team in Opening and Closing Ceremonies.
Poet placed second with her Prepared Speech titled Soil and Darius placed fourth in Creed and was third with his Prepared Speech, Dairy and Beef Cattle Management. Poet and Darius both competed at the State JR High Public Speaking Contests at New Mexico Leadership Conference in February.
On February 2, the high school members from the district met at the NMSU campus to compete. High school members have six contests: Greenhand Prepared Speech, Greenhand Quiz, Greenhand
Creed, Chapter Prepared Speech, Job Interview, and Extemporaneous Public Speaking, with Greenhand Quiz being the only team activity. From Reserve, Camden Hardy, Deliah DePuy, and Michael Carrejo competed in Extemporaneous Public Speaking; Rebekah McCarty competed in Chapter Prepared; Cheyenne Spencer competed in Greenhand Creed; Brieanna McCormick, Cheyenne Spencer, and Harley Derrick competed in Greenhand Prepared; and Brieanna McCormick, Deliah DePuy, Michael Carrejo, and Harley Derrick were the team that competed in Greenhand Quiz.
The results for this contest were very pleasing as well. Rebekah McCarty placed first in the Chapter Prepared Speech contest with her speech, Agricultural Plight, Camden Hardy was second in Extemporaneous Public Speaking after her presentation about ensuring that we will have ag teachers in the future, Cheyenne Spencer placed third in Greenhand Prepared Speech with her speech, Systems of Breeding
in Cattle and fourth in Greenhand Creed, and the Greenhand Quiz team placed second. All contestants that placed third or higher will be competing at the state level in June at the NM State FFA Convention.
