Extra Good in Olive Oil
A natural chemical called “oleocanthal” a phenylethanoid that is found in extra virgin olive oil has been showing remarkable properties in tests.
The chemical works like Ibuprofen in that it stops pain and reduces swelling. Recent studies show that it can stop or delays the onset of Alzheimer’s disease and other neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, a new study published in “Molecular and Cellular Oncology” shows that oleocanthal completely kills many kinds of cancer.
The way oleocanthal works is amazing. It contains the enzymes COX-1 and COX-2 which create the same pain-relieving and anti -inflammatory effect as Ibuprofen. The way it acts on Alzheimer’s is by singling out the ADDLs which are a toxic division of normal body protein, and making them easier for the body’s natural defenses to eliminate.
The chemical works on some cancer cells by killing them with their own enzymes. Oleocanthal punctures the cancer cells vesi- cles which store their waste products, causing the waste to poison the cancer cell from within, yet it never harms a healthy cell.
Oleocanthal is naturally occurring in extra virgin olive oil. Organic extra virgin olive oil is recommended by many as the best source. Oleoncanthal is NOT present in “virgin” or “regular” olive oil, but is only found in the “extra virgin” variety.
The oil can be used in cooking, but is recommended in salad dressings and can be used directly. Three tablespoons of oleocanthal is recommended to help with headaches or inflammation. Oleocanthal is also showing promise in testing with helping in treating inflammatory degenerative joint diseases.
For those who do not like the taste of olive oil, oleocanthal is being offered by many supplement companies now in forms that can more easily be swallowed.
