Reserve at FFA Convention
The first week of June, the Reserve FFA Chapter was able to participate in the 87th New Mexico State FFA Convention. The chapter took sixteen of its members, the largest number of members that have been taken to any event. During the convention, the members went to sessions to view retiring officer addresses, competed in various events, helped select the 2015-2016 state officer team, and participated in the sessions. The chapter was honored to be selected to participate in the courtesy corp. On the courtesy crop, the members stood at the doors to welcome other members from across the state of New Mexico into the sessions.
Two days before the convention started, two of the members, Katherin and Rebekah McCarty went to Las Cruces to participate on the State Officer Nominating Committee. The committee consists of twelve members throughout the state that put the officer candidates through intense interviews in order to make a recommendation to the rest of the state on the most qualified candidates.
The chapter is very proud of all of the competing members who both participated and placed. The Ag Issues competition requires members to research an issue that is taking place in their area and present a skit demonstrating the severity of the issue. The team, consisting of Katherin McCarty, Camden Gantenbein, Cody Goetz, Brendon Goetz, Brieanna McCormick, and Poet James placed forth. Camden Gantenbein also placed third in Extemporaneous Speech. In this competition, members are given five minutes to prepare a five minute speech on a topic that is selected at the time of the competition. The chapter also had two members participate in Prepared Speech. Cheyenne Spencer competed on the Greenhand level and Rebekah McCarty competed on the Chapter level. Rebekah McCarty placed first with her speech entitled “Agricultural Plight” and will represent both our chapter and state at the national level in October in Louisville, Kentucky. Congratulations to all the participants.
Finally, the members listened to the retiring addresses of the current state officers and participated in selecting the new -2016 state officer team. Four of the members: Ben Fletcher, Taylor Laney, Rebekah McCarty, and Brieanna McCormick participated as voting delegates to determine next year’s state officer team. Being an officer in FFA at the local, state, and national levels, is an honor that each member strongly desires. This next year, Rebekah McCarty will represent the Reserve FFA Chapter as the District VI Treasurer.
Throughout this next month, Rebekah McCarty will go to the District Officer Training and some of the other members will participate in the New Mexico FFA Leadership Camp. The chapter would like to thank all of the supporters for helping the members get to all of these events so that we may represent our town with pride.
