Cool morning temperatures didn't stop the contestants from heating things up at the First Annual Chile Cook -Off held by Catron County Youth Association (CCYA). Stock pots and Dutch ovens were filled with secret ingredients and left to simmer while locals lined up to taste the chile. When things got too hot, mouth-watering desserts were served to put out the flames. Judges Connie Cordell, Jackie Fryer, and John Swenson had the challenging task of selecting winners in each category.
The winners circle was led by Tawnya Kaber who took first place in chile, followed by Yolanda DeLao in second place, Joe Dempsey and David Shum in third.
Joe Dempsey and David Shum took the lead in the dessert category, with Arden Ward in second place.
People's Choice winners were Aaron Baldridge—chile, Joe Dempsey and David Shum—dessert.
Amanda Ghert took home the showmanship award for the best decorated table.
Congratulations to all the winners and thank you to the judges.
After the awards, spectators headed over to the barn to wait for Shane and Jan Atwood's cow to mark the spot in Cow Pie Bingo. Congratulations to David Wissler who purchased the winning square. Finally, muscles were stretched, flexed and maybe pulled during the anvil toss and human-tractor pulls. This year was a great start and we look forward to next year!
Proceeds from the CookOff go to CCYA and help support our local children's events. We are so blessed to be part of a community that is so supportive of our youth. Thank you for all you do!
