Once in a Lifetime Hunt

Catron Courier - - Front Page - by Richard Nicolds

In 1970, the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish imported 15 Persian ibex from Iran and released them in the Florida Mountains near Deming, NM. Soon after, an additional 27 were released, and a sustainable population was established.

This year Ann Marie Nicolds of Luna drew a tag for this hunt and killed this 41 inch Ibex in the Florida Mountains southeast of Deming, on the morning of the second day of her hunt. She was guided by her husband Daniel and son Joseph on this once in a lifetime hunt.

Topping the scale at five feet, Ann Marie Found the terrain to be, “Very rugged and hostile”, and the .300 Baer rifle with which she shot her Ibex was, “Loud and punishing”.

Even though this Ibex was not in the record book category, it is certainly a very respectable trophy. Ann Marie is the director of the Luna EMS group, but she didn’t try to revive this one.
