Greg Rikaart’s “Journey Is Just Beginning!”
After 14 years on THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS, Greg Rikaart will last appear as Kevin in August — at least for now.
The In Depth Story: June 8 will mark Rikaart’s 14th anniversary on the soap — which is about 13 years more than he had anticipated being around when he was originally cast as the Internet predator who gave Lily chlamydia. “I came on to do 10 to 20 episodes,” the actor told Soaps In Depth four years after joining Y&R in 2003. “It’s really remarkable. I don’t take any of this for granted. Whatever the future holds for me, Y&R will always hold an important place in my heart.” The 2005 Daytime Emmy winner can attribute his longevity on the soap to an early decision by the powers that be to ground his character by making him the brother of a Genoa City mainstay, Christian Jules Leblanc’s Michael. Over the years, Rikaart’s alter ego grew from a disturbed villain still haunted by his abusive father to an upstanding — if quirky — good guy looking for love while working for
the police department.
In an emotional farewell post on Instagram, Rikaart wrote that when he first booked Y&R, “in my wildest dreams, I could never have imagined what it would turn into: a career- defining experience that has brought me so much happiness and fulfillment. Playing Kevin and watching him evolve over the years has mirrored my real life in so many ways. We both found love, both became dads, and we both have more gray hair now than we did in 2003.
“I have such love and fondness for the cast and crew of Y&R that when I watch Kevin enjoying himself in scenes,” he goes on, “it’s hard to know where he ends and Greg begins.”
Though it has been reported that Rikaart’s contract was not renewed by the soap, there does seem to be the potential for him to make a return down the line. “At the moment, it is unclear what lies ahead for Kevin and I,” he wrote, “as we will be saying good- bye to Genoa City for a while. [But] I cannot overstate how much gratitude I have to all of you who have been such loud cheerleaders for me. You’ve all enriched my life.
“So stick around,” he added. “The journey is just beginning.”
Y&R, as is its policy, will not comment on comings and goings. However, that certainly hasn’t stopped viewers from speculating that Kevin will leave Genoa City around the same time that Elizabeth Hendrickson is due to take her final bow as Chloe. Maybe Bella’s parents will get a happy ending after all?
