Can Billy’s relationship with Phyllis survive Jill’s wrath?

CBS Soaps In Depth - - On The Town -

THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ Billy and Phyllis have done their darnedest to ignore their detractors, even setting up their love nest in her penthouse. Yet this week, the couple will be facing their biggest obstacle yet, squaring off with the one woman who has spent her life refusing to be ignored — Jill!

Jill Goes On The Warpath!

When Jill left town to travel the world with Colin, she was under the impression that Billy and Victoria were on the road to reconciliation. So it’s not surprising that the returning matriarch is none too pleased to discover that while she was away, her son actually took another route, resuming his red-hot romance with his brother’s ex-wife! Distressed over the turn of events, Jill doesn’t even bother to unpack before she makes a beeline for Billy to express her disapproval, disappointment and, oh yeah, dire warnings that his relationship with Phyllis is doomed!

“Jill believes that Billy should be with his family and Victoria, and she doesn’t really let up on that!” laughs Jason Thompson, who plays Phyllis’ main squeeze. “I don’t know how many times he says, ‘Stop, stop, just stop!’

“But I think there is something very much alike about Jill and Billy,” he adds. “They don’t take no for an answer lightly or easily. They’re both kind of persistent!”

For Billy, that means trying to make his mother see that he didn’t “choose” Phyllis over Victoria, but that this was the way the chips fell after his former wife froze him out! “There had been moments when Billy thought that he and Victoria could come together again, and in those moments, there were a lot of feelings! But then it became clear to him that it

wasn’t going to happen — Victoria made that very clear,” Thompson notes. “At the same time, there were a lot of unresolved feelings between Billy and Phyllis. During their affair, relationship, whatever you want to call it, they really thought they could make a go of it. So when that really presented itself again, I think Billy wanted to explore those feelings, to see if they’re real and go forward with Phyllis.

“He tells all this to his mother,” he continues. “He wants her to understand, but he’s not necessarily asking for her approval. He’s like, ‘You can either accept this or you don’t have to. It’s up to you. But I’m with Phyllis, we’re together, and this is what’s happening!’”

A Matter Of Life And Death?

Still, Jill wouldn’t be Jill if she didn’t at least try to browbeat her son into dumping Phyllis. Normally, Billy would push back hard against his mom. But these are not normal times, with Billy fearing that Jill’s ticker might not be able to stand up to open warfare! “Billy doesn’t want to stress her out, given what she’s been through healthwise,” previews Thompson. “He doesn’t want to be the cause of her blood pressure rising or her having another heart attack.”

That doesn’t mean the hunk’s going to cave to external maternal pressures. “Billy is a grown man,” says Thompson. “He’d love his mother’s support, but he doesn’t need it. He’s not going to go, ‘You’re right, Mom, let me put the brakes on my relationship with Phyllis!’”

No-longer-secret Lovers

Of course, Billy doesn’t expect Jill not to interfere. Heck, that’s what she does. However, Thompson believes that Jill will be less of an issue for his alter ego than all the normalcy that is involved in setting up house with someone. “There’s a feeling-out process with Billy and Phyllis right now,”

shares his portrayer. “They’re trying to figure out how to take this relationship out of the box that they’ve had to live in for a long time, and there are definitely moments where they’re like, ‘Is this the right thing?’

“Billy tries to reassure Phyllis that [being together openly] will take some time to get used to,” he continues. “They were somewhat deceitful with their loved ones [when their affair began], so they came from a place that wasn’t honest. Now they are like, ‘Can we trust what this means?’”

A Wild Card In The Deck!

Ironically, Billy and Phyllis may find that sneaking around or even circling the wagons against everyone in town who is against them has its benefits. “When the passion is dialed up, it’s easy to stake your claim,” points out Thompson. “I think that the love, passion and understanding that these two have for each other is very real, but I also think these two characters will fight tooth and nail to prove everybody wrong. It’s like, ‘We’ll show you that you’re wrong and that we’re going to make [our relationship] work!’

“But it’s going to be the quiet moments in between, when they’re going to have to be truthful with each other and themselves… that’s the hard stuff,” he adds. “I like the moments that are not explosive, when it’s just two people trying to figure out how to be in a relationship with each other. Going forward, I honestly don’t know what’s going to happen. Billy will always have a deep love for Victoria, but as of right now, he wants to see where it goes with Phyllis!”

Still, as he goes forward with the feisty beauty, Billy might do well to watch his back… because Jill isn’t the kind of mother to give up her matchmaking schemes so easily!

“I give you one simple job, Victoria — reunite with Billy. And this is what I come home to?”

Leave it to Jill to make Phyllis a whole different kind of “other woman.”

Out of habit, Billy snuck in to canoodle with Phyllis before realizing that… hello! Their relationship was no longer a dirty little secret.
