Gold Star: Jess Walton (Jill)
THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ Jess Walton brings alter ego Jill back with gusto!
Whenever THE YOUNG & THE RESTLESS’ Jill pops back into Genoa City, we know that we won’t be bored. However, this time around, as the soap celebrated its 45th anniversary, we got an extra dose of Jillcentric feistiness as the beauticianturned-businesswoman dealt with her own blast from the past, running into her former stepdaughters, Leslie and Lorie Brooks. The phenomenal talent of Jess Walton, which could actually make us forget that she wasn’t the actress who’d played the character when her feud with the Brooks sisters began, deserves applause… as well as this week’s Gold Star!
Tense “Family” Reunion
Jill was already on the warpath when she returned to town, prepared to confront Nikki about changing Chancellor Park and Katherine’s memorial… so it didn’t take much to get her riled up when she overheard her name being mentioned
— and not in a good way — at the GCAC. Still, surprise flickered across her face when she traced the source of the condescension back to the Brooks sisters, who were in town to honor their father — Jill’s former hubby — Stuart. It took about two seconds before barbs were flying, with Lorie denouncing her dad’s ill-fated marriage to Jill, prompting her to reply, “In case you’ve both forgotten, Stuart’s life was extended because of me! I performed an emergency tracheotomy on him. He was choking… I followed Snapper’s instructions to the letter over the phone, and it was horrible. But by the time the paramedics got there, Stuart was breathing again!”
While Leslie admitted that Jill had been a hero that day, Lorie was quick to mock, “It was all the other days that you were with Dad that were a problem for us.” Impatience flared in Jill’s eyes as the women recalled her less-than-admirable seduction of Stuart, who happened to be then- mother Liz’s boyfriend. “For God’s sakes!” she huffed. “I was a single mother trying to provide a good home for my son, okay? And when the opportunity arose, I took it!”
Many Shades Of Jill
There’s no question that Jill has a ruthless streak. But she also has tremendous compassion. Later, when Dina attacked her for being a floozy who stole John Abbott, Jill kept her claws firmly sheathed, recognizing that Dina was in the grip of an Alzheimer’s episode. Still, Jill isn’t going to be nominated for sainthood anytime soon. In fact, she couldn’t contain her exasperation after spending time with Dina and her erratic personality. “My God, how do you stand the constant back and forth with that woman!” she asked Abby, visibly annoyed.
Like a flawless sculpture, Walton has carved out a multilayered character — one who is unapologetic about her past, irascible in the present and sly with her humor. And that’s why, when Jill’s globetrotting adventure with Colin continues, we will be grabbing that pen to eagerly mark our calendars for Walton’s return engagement!
