Lawn mower racing in Jarrettsville Saturday
— Spring has sprung, for the most part, and with the sunshine comes the need to mow the lawn. For some that chore is more fun than it is for others.
If you want to find out just how much fun a lawnmower can be, head over to Jack’s Small Engines at 1745 Jarrettsville Road in Jarrettsville this Saturday. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., you’ll experience lawnmowers like you have never seen. We’re not talking garden variety here, pun very much intended.
The United States Lawn Mower Racing Exhibition will hold a race at Jack’s Small Engines during the annual open house this Saturday. All the fun and excitement of lawn mower racing is part of the day, along with a chance to meet Maryland State lawn mower racing champions Manny Torres, of Port Deposit, and Lou Filos, of Bel Air.
Torres is the United States Lawn Mower Racing Association, USLMRA, National Tech Director, a veteran racer and true turf warrior. Filos is a mechanic and owner of Little Lou’s Lawn Service. He is also a coach and mentor to his two racing daughters, Dawn and Lauren, ages 24 and 17, who have been racing their entire lives.
The event is free and fun for all ages with a moon bounce, plenty of food, chainsaw carving, raffles, giveaways, equipment demonstrations and a chance to hang out with the Ravens mascot Poe and the Orioles bird.
Local area USLMRA racing champions are lawn mowing experts and both Torres and Filos, along with others, will offer equipment cleaning tips and best practices on preparing equipment – mowers to weed wackers – for spring time use.
