John A. Redding Jr.
John A. Redding Jr., ‘Jack’, 90, of Chestertown, MD, passed away on April 2, 2016 in Shore Nursing & Rehab Center, Chestertown.
Jack was born on Sept. 24, 1925 in Cecilton, MD, son of the late John A. and Mary Alderson Redding Sr. He was raised in Fairlee, MD, and at the age of 16, his family moved to Rising Sun, MD, where he graduated from high school. In 1946, he moved to Newark, DE and began his 31 year career with General Motors, retiring in 1978. After his retirement he operated a hunting guide service from his home. Jack was an active member of Christiana United Methodist Church from 1951 to 1978, serving as MYF Leader and a Trustee. He and his wife returned to Chestertown where he was an active member of Chestertown Baptist Church. He helped with their Junior and Senior Camp, Sunday School, was a Choir member and led the Men’s Quartet, helped with maintenance and served as a Deacon.
Jack loved playing and coaching softball and pitched until the age of 75. He enjoyed carpentry work, carving decoys, hunting, gardening, traveling and camping. Jack was loved by all who knew him.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his sisters, Ruth Dixon, Emily Bland and Jane Barton; a brother, William Redding; granddaughter, Tina Michelle Redding and greatgrandson, Abram Joseph Hall.
Jack is survived by his wife of 68 years, Irene Swain Redding; four children, Kathryn Shetzler (James) of Dunnellon, FL, John A. Redding III (Kay) of Chesapeake City, MD, Nancy Hall and Carol Soldau, both of Newark, DE; 14 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held on Friday, April 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Chestertown Baptist Church, 401 Morgnec Road, Chestertown, MD, and again on Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m., where funeral service will begin 11 a.m. Burial in Crumpton Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be offered to Chestertown Baptist Church, 401 Morgnec Road, Chestertown, MD 21620.
