John A. Red­ding Jr., ‘Jack’, 90, of Ch­ester­town, MD, passed away on April 2, 2016 in Shore Nurs­ing & Re­hab Cen­ter, Ch­ester­town.

Jack was born on Sept. 24, 1925 in Ce­cil­ton, MD, son of the late John A. and Mary Alder­son Red­ding Sr. He was raised in Fair­lee, MD, and at the age of 16, his fam­ily moved to Ris­ing Sun, MD, where he grad­u­ated from high school. In 1946, he moved to Ne­wark, DE and be­gan his 31 year ca­reer with General Mo­tors, re­tir­ing in 1978. Af­ter his re­tire­ment he op­er­ated a hunt­ing guide ser­vice from his home. Jack was an ac­tive mem­ber of Chris­tiana United Methodist Church from 1951 to 1978, serv­ing as MYF Leader and a Trus­tee. He and his wife re­turned to Ch­ester­town where he was an ac­tive mem­ber of Ch­ester­town Bap­tist Church. He helped with their Ju­nior and Se­nior Camp, Sun­day School, was a Choir mem­ber and led the Men’s Quar­tet, helped with main­te­nance and served as a Dea­con.

Jack loved play­ing and coach­ing soft­ball and pitched un­til the age of 75. He en­joyed car­pen­try work, carv­ing de­coys, hunt­ing, gar­den­ing, trav­el­ing and camp­ing. Jack was loved by all who knew him.

Along with his par­ents he was pre­ceded in death by his sis­ters, Ruth Dixon, Emily Bland and Jane Bar­ton; a brother, Wil­liam Red­ding; grand­daugh­ter, Tina Michelle Red­ding and great­grand­son, Abram Joseph Hall.

Jack is sur­vived by his wife of 68 years, Irene Swain Red­ding; four chil­dren, Kathryn Shet­zler (James) of Dun­nel­lon, FL, John A. Red­ding III (Kay) of Ch­e­sa­peake City, MD, Nancy Hall and Carol Soldau, both of Ne­wark, DE; 14 grand­chil­dren; 36 great grand­chil­dren, and one great-great grand­chil­dren.

A view­ing will be held on Fri­day, April 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. in Ch­ester­town Bap­tist Church, 401 Morgnec Road, Ch­ester­town, MD, and again on Satur­day from 10 to 11 a.m., where fu­neral ser­vice will be­gin 11 a.m. Burial in Crump­ton Ceme­tery.
