Cecil resident runs in Boston Marathon
— George Raley, a 69-year-old Rising Sun area resident and avid runner, ran the Boston Marathon on Monday.
Several of his colleagues from Cecil County Board of Parks and Recreation contacted the Cecil Whig Monday to say how proud they are of Raley, who made it through the rigorous qualification process to be able to participate in the 2016 race.
Raley serves as vice chairman of the county’s parks and recreation board.
“It’s a huge honor for George to be in Boston today,” said Ella Briones, administrative assistant in the department of parks
Information on the Boston Athletic Association website says that 4,562 qualified applicants who applied to run in the 2016 Boston Marathon were not accepted this year because of an excess of applicants. The organizers limit the field to 30,000 runners.
According to the unofficial results, Raley finished the famous course in 4 hours, 24 minutes and 19 seconds, averaging about a mile every 10 minutes. He placed 21,116 out of the competitors.
“He’s ready to go and represents Cecil County at Boston today,” Cecil County Board of Parks and Recreation Chairman Don Harmer said.
