Celebrate Mother’s Day with help from local businesses

Cecil Whig - - LOCAL -

Treat mom with something local this Mother’s Day. The traditional gifts – candy, flowers, jewelry – can be found at area small businesses, and there are also a couple opportunities to take mom out for a special event if you want to do something different. For a family treat Sweet Spice Bake Shop in North East is baking up three different mini cakes – in chocolate, lemonraspberry and vanilla – for Mother’s Day. While the flavors are traditional, the decoration will be a bit over the top so mom really knows she’s special. Cakes will come decorated with extravagant specialty piping, colorful icing and beautiful sugar flowers.

Cakes are $25 each. Some will be available in the shop for walkin customers on Mother’s Day, but folks are encouraged to pre-order by May 5 to ensure the cake of their choice.

Sweet Spice Bake Shop is located at 17 S. Main St. in North East. For more on Sweet Spice Bake Shop or to make an order, visit the business on Facebook or www. sweetspicebakeshop.com, or call 410-287-5021. For something sweet If the mother in your life is a chocoholic, head to North East Chocolates (which recently opened a secondary location inside Belle Connell’s Emporium in south Chesapeake City).

Chocolate-covered strawberries are the special treat for the holiday – but the fancy fruit isn’t just dipped in chocolate. Always a big hit for Mother’s Day, the treats can customized with such flavors as sea salt caramel, toffee, cookies and cream, and white chocolate with macadamia nut.

Strawberries will be sold to walkin customers, but to make a special order the store needs to know at least a day in advance. Cost is $13 for a half dozen or $25 for a full dozen, and that includes sales tax. The strawberries can be purchased in a special reusable box and dressed up with ribbon.

And, of course, there’s always the wide selection of chocolates, fudge and novelty candies the store regularly sells.

North East Chocolates is located at 24 S. Main St. in North East and at 222 Bohemia Ave. in Chesapeake City. For more on North East Chocolates or to make an order, visit the business on Facebook or www.nechocolates.com, or call 443-907-7682

Additionally, the business will be partnering up with Turkey Point Vineyard Tasting Room to do a chocolate and wine tasting from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. May 7 and 8. Tickets are $10 per person, and that includes three wine pairings and a bonus chocolate gift box for all mothers. Call 410-287-WINE for tickets. The tasting room is located at 116 S. Main St. in North East. For a brighter day Those dropping into Perfect Pet- als Florist & Decor in Rising Sun have a variety of options to choose from for Mother’s Day. Right now, hanging baskets are a popular choice. However, mixed flowers or roses delivered in a vase are also a classic and timeless option.

The store will have blooms for sale over the Mother’s Day weekend, but if delivery is required it is better to get an order in sooner rather than later.

Perfect Petals is located at 225 E Main St. in Rising Sun. For more on Perfect Petals or to make an order, visit the business on Facebook or www.perfectpetalsltd.com or call 410-658-1326.
