Newark Police search­ing for car in­volved in Elkton Road crash

Police are look­ing for the owner of a Volk­swa­gen Bee­tle who swerved into another car’s lane Sun­day, caus­ing the driver to hit a util­ity pole on Elkton Road.

Ac­cord­ing to Newark Police spokesman Cpl. James Spadola, the crash oc­curred around 1: 49 p. m. Sun­day as a Toy­ota Corolla and the Bee­tle were trav­el­ing on Elkton Road near Short Lane.

Spadola said the driver of the Bee­tle en­tered the Corolla’s lane, caus­ing the Corolla to swer ve and hit a tele­phone pole. The two cars, how­ever, did not make con­tact.

When police ar­rived, wit­nesses had al­ready pulled the victim from the Corolla, which was to­taled. He was taken to Chris­tiana Hos­pi­tal for in­juries to his arms and legs and re­mains in the hos­pi­tal in sta­ble con­di­tion.

Spadola said the road was closed for more than seven hours while crews re­placed the dam­aged util­ity pole.

The driver of the Bee­tle was not at the scene when police ar­rived; how­ever, traf­fic cam­eras in the area cap­tured a photo of the car. Spadola said of­fi­cers are tr ying to iden­tify the driver, who may or may not be charged pend­ing an in­ves­ti­ga­tion.
