Elks host Cobras to begin baseball playoffs
Only one local baseball team will experience playoff action this week, before four others take the diamond on Monday.
Fourth-seeded Elkton (7-11) will host fifth-seeded Harford Tech (513) today in the opening round of the 2A East Region Section I playoffs. The contest will be a rematch from the regular season when the Golden Elks prevailed over the Cobras, 4-3, on April 3.
Elkton will aim to maintain its late-season momentum after it won three of its final four games. If it emerges victorious, the Elks will advance to play host top-seeded Fallston (11-7) on Monday, which topped the Cecil squad 11-6 on April 22.
Across the bracket, secondseeded North East (10-7) will host third-seeded Rising Sun (8-10) on Monday in the sectional semifinal. The game will serve as a rematch from Tuesday when the Tigers prevailed over the rival Indians, 6-4, in the season finale for both teams.
This year marks the first time under fourth-year head coach Clyde Van Dyke that the Tigers didn’t enter the tournament as the top seed. They intend to earn a region final berth after failing to advance past the sectional final each of the past three years.
The Indians last won a region title in 2006 when it captured the state championship.
Eagles, Panthers meet for third time
Cecil County rivals Bohemia Manor and Perryville will battle for a third time when the two teams tango in the second round of the 1A North Region Section I playoffs on Monday.
The second-seeded Eagles (15-3) will host the third-seeded Panthers (9-9) in the sectional semifinals. It will mark the second straight year the two teams faced each other in the playoffs after Bo Manor topped Perryville last May in the quarterfinals.
The Eagles, who captured the Susquehanna Division championship, swept the regular-season series between the two squads. They edged the Panthers 8-6 on March 30, before topping them 7-4 on April 12.
Top-seeded Patterson Mill (153), which won the Chesapeake Division, is making its 1A debut after advancing to the 2A state semifinals last season. The Huskies await the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between fourthseeded Havre de Grace (4-16) and fifth-seeded Joppatowne (2-14).
Bo Manor most recently won a region title in 2013, while Perryville last captured a region crown in 1979.
