County rivals square off in softball playoffs
A pair of Cecil County rivals will square off in the 2A East Region Section I softball semifinals when North East hosts Rising Sun this afternoon.
The Tigers (6-11) will look to continue its playoff success after defeating visiting Elkton, 5-0, on Friday, while the Indians (15-2), who earned the sectional’s top seed and a first-round bye, aim to maintain the success that allowed the team to capture the Susquehanna Div- sion championship.
The contest will prove to be a rematch from the regular-season finale when North East edged Rising Sun, 2-0, on May 9.
The winner will advance to face either Harford Tech or Fallston in Wednesday’s sectional final.
Panthers, Eagles on collision course
After an undefeated regular season in which it finished 17-0 and secured the Chesapeake Division championship, the Perryville softball team will now begin postseason play hoping to capture the program’s first-ever state crown.
After earning the sectional’s top seed and a firstround bye, the Panthers will open the playoffs today against visiting Patterson Mill (7-12) in the 1A North Region Section I semifinals.
While Perryville did not face the Huskies—a lowerdivision team –during the regular season, a victory over Patterson Mill would create a potential showdown with a very familiar opponent in the sectional final.
Bohemia Manor (15-3), which ended the year second in the upper division, opens the playoffs this afternoon against visiting Havre de Grace (9-7). A win for the Eagles would set up a matchup with Perryville, with a trip to the region final on the line.
Bo Manor will be looking for redemption after suffering a two-game season sweep at the hands of the Panthers during the regular season. If they meet, it will mark the fifth time in the past six years the Cecil County rivals battled in the postseason.
Rising Sun will visit top-seeded North East in the 2A East Region Section I softball semifinals on Monday.
