George Joseph Benvegno, Sr.
George Joseph Benvegno, Sr., age 73, of North East, MD, passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2016, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Chester, PA, on July 4, 1942, he was the son of the late George A. and Helen Kauffman Benvegno.
Mr. Benvegno was the President of Colonial Metals, Inc., Elkton, MD. He was an active member of Immaculate Conception Parish, where he participated in the choir for Immaculate Conception Church and St. Jude Catholic Church. Mr. Benvegno was a member and Past President of Elkton Rotary Club; had served on the Cecil College Foundation Board for 9 years; and was a member of the International Precious Metals Institute. He was a charter member and served on the Board of Directors of the Cecil Business Leaders; was instrumental in helping to bring Harford Family Group to Cecil County; and a charter member of Baynet Bank. Other memberships included the Elk River Yacht Club, North East River Yacht Club, and Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, Springfield, PA.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mary E. Benvegno; son, George J. Benvegno, Jr. and wife, Sally, North East, MD; grandson, George J. Benvegno, III; sister, Nancy Mayew, Wilmington, DE; niece, Patrice Blackway and husband, Jeff, and their children, Jenna, Brittany and Jeffrey; niece, the late Lisa Applegate, her husband, Rusty, and their daughter, Payton; niece, Linda Mayew and children, William and Sara; and nephew, John Mayew and wife, Sabrina, and their children, Johnny and Tommy.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12 Noon, Tuesday, May 31, 2016, at St. Jude Catholic Church, 928 Turkey Point Road, North East, MD, where visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception/ St. Jude Catholic Church, or to Mount Aviat Academy, in care of Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton Street, Elkton, MD 21921.
