— Student artwork got upgraded from the refrigerator door recently, thanks to a student exhibition at the Delaware Art Museum.

Rising Sun Middle School, Mount Aviat Academy and Good Shepherd Catholic School were among the schools participating in the museum’s Art Smart program. Works from the students ranged from photographs to collages and black-and-white sketches.

Art Smart student exhibitions are collaborations between the museum and area schools. To be accepted, students must create art inspired by the museum’s collections. The dozens of works from county students hung on wall space in the first floor and lower level galleries. There were several opportunities for students and their families to see the works, which went up earlier this month, for free.

Last Friday, students from Rising Sun Middle School got to see their work — and that of the museum’s more renowned artists — during a field trip to the museum.

WILMINGTON, DEL.

The works of contemporary American realist artist Janet Fish inspired seventh-grader Sarah Miller. Like Fish, Miller chose bright colors for her piece that was on display at the museum.

Miller said her father enjoyed art, particularly papier-mâché and sketching, so creating art herself makes her think of him. Participating in the exhibit boosted her confidence in her artwork

“If I put my mind to it, I can be an artist,” she said.

The trip got sixth-grader Dylan Ballas thinking about what he could do next. He said one day he’d like to try sculpting with re- cycled pieces of metal. He said he was inspired by a piece he saw in the museum’s gallery — “Riot,” made by artist Deborah Butterfield out of found metal objects.

“I didn’t think I was good at art,” Ballas said, adding he’s now changed his mind.

He said he was happy with how his work inspired by glass artist Dale Chihuly turned out. He used vibrant blues, purple, greens and reds in his abstract piece.

At the end of the field trip, students helped pack up their works. Many said they planned to turn it into a gift or put it on display in their own home.
