James Charles McVey, age 82, of Ch­e­sa­peake City, MD, passed away Mon­day, June 6, 2016. Born in Wilm­ing­ton, DE, on April 2, 1934, he was the son of the late James and Josephine Thomp­son McVey.

A U.S. Army vet­eran, Mr. McVey re­tired as a trainer of stan­dard­bred horses and as a mutuel teller at Delaware Park. An avid horse lover, he en­joyed horse rac­ing and work­ing as a trainer along­side his fa­ther. Mr. McVey was a base­ball fan and coach and had played semi-pro­fes­sional base­ball in Wilm­ing­ton in the 1950s. He en­joyed crab­bing and watch­ing pur­ple mar­tins in flight.

Sur­vivors in­clude his chil­dren, James McVey, Down­ing­town, PA, Michael McVey, Haver­town, PA, Joseph McVey and wife, Christie, West Or­ange, NJ, Elaine Tat­man and hus­band, Troy, Ne­wark, DE, and Emily McVey, Ch­e­sa­peake City, MD; sis­ter, Josephine Mur­phy and hus­band, Ken, Hager­stown, MD, 9 grand­chil­dren; and sis­ter-in-law, Joan McVey, Wilm­ing­ton, DE.

In ad­di­tion to his par­ents, Mr. McVey was pre­ceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Gertrude M. McVey; and brother, Jack McVey.

Mass of Chris­tian Burial will be cel­e­brated at 11:30 a.m., Mon­day, June 13, 2016, at St. Joseph Church, 371 E. Main Street, Mid­dle­town, DE, where visi­ta­tion will be­gin at 10 a.m. In­ter­ment in St. Rose of Lima Ceme­tery, Ch­e­sa­peake City, will be pri­vate.
