James Charles McVey
James Charles McVey, age 82, of Chesapeake City, MD, passed away Monday, June 6, 2016. Born in Wilmington, DE, on April 2, 1934, he was the son of the late James and Josephine Thompson McVey.
A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. McVey retired as a trainer of standardbred horses and as a mutuel teller at Delaware Park. An avid horse lover, he enjoyed horse racing and working as a trainer alongside his father. Mr. McVey was a baseball fan and coach and had played semi-professional baseball in Wilmington in the 1950s. He enjoyed crabbing and watching purple martins in flight.
Survivors include his children, James McVey, Downingtown, PA, Michael McVey, Havertown, PA, Joseph McVey and wife, Christie, West Orange, NJ, Elaine Tatman and husband, Troy, Newark, DE, and Emily McVey, Chesapeake City, MD; sister, Josephine Murphy and husband, Ken, Hagerstown, MD, 9 grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Joan McVey, Wilmington, DE.
In addition to his parents, Mr. McVey was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Gertrude M. McVey; and brother, Jack McVey.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m., Monday, June 13, 2016, at St. Joseph Church, 371 E. Main Street, Middletown, DE, where visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Interment in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery, Chesapeake City, will be private.
