Broomell tapped to fill Elk­ton seat

— Af­ter con­sid­er­ing more than a dozen ap­pli­cants, the Elk­ton Board of Com­mis­sion­ers an­nounced Wed­nes­day night that Jean Broomell will be its se­lec­tion to fill the seat left va­cant by the res­ig­na­tion of for­mer Com­mis­sioner DJ VanRee­nen last month.

“I felt hon­ored. I felt hum­bled,” Broomell said Thurs­day about when she found out about the de­ci­sion.

She said she re­ceived a phone call from Mayor Rob Alt Wed­nes­day night, let­ting her know she was cho­sen. She was not at the evening com­mis­sioner meet­ing due to a prior en­gage­ment.

Broomell served on the board from 1992 to 2004, although she took some time off for per­sonal rea­sons and chose not to run for re-elec­tion. She was also a mem­ber of the plan­ning com­mis­sion and in­volved in projects such as the Main Street Pro­gram, among other things.
