To all the pa­trons at the Sun­day show­ing of the mu­si­cal “Amer­i­can Idiot” who were wor­ried that I brought my two girls to the per­for­mance be­cause of the sub­ject mat­ter and lan­guage: When was the last time you were at any school or a store in the area?

My daugh­ters, who are 8 and 11, en­joyed the show a lot. The youngest said these peo­ple don’t know we lived this for real, this is pre­tend and it had a happy end­ing. Ours didn’t!

This is art and it is sad that so many feel the need to judge. They have been through more in their young lives than most of you could ever imag­ine. I won’t elab­o­rate to
