Police charge man in West End Gardens assault, robbery
— A man is facing several charges after an argument at West End Gardens turned violent early Tuesday morning, police
Wayne Elmer Furman, 44, was charged with robbery, theft of less than $100 and second-degree assault after getting into a violent argument, stealing the victim’s cellphone and fleeing the scene just before police arrived, according to authorities.
Police responded to West End Gardens at about 12:34 a.m. Tuesday after getting a call about an assault in progress. But before offi- cers arrived at the scene, they learned the suspect had already fled, police reported.
Officers investigated and learned that Furman had come into the victim’s room that night and started an argument. The argument soon turned physical, with Furman grabbing her arms and beginning to assault her, police reported.
The victim tried to call 911 on a cellphone but Furman pushed the victim to the ground and grabbed her phone. He then con- tinued to assault the victim as she lay on the floor, police reported.
Tw o neighbors in adjacent rooms heard the commotion and came into the room. They told Furman they had already called the police and upon hearing this, Furman fled the scene, police reported.
Officers canvassed the area and arrested Furman without incident near West End Gardens, according to police.
The victim had bruises on both arms consistent with being grabbed and also complained of neck pain but refused medical treatment, according to police.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Furman remained committed to the Cecil County Detention Center in lieu of $10,000 bail, according to online court records.
