— In an effort to alleviate parking concerns, several shuttle buses will be available to take people to the Salute to Cecil County Veterans event at North East Community Park on Sunday.

The Salute to Cecil County Veterans committee announced this week that two shuttle buses will start running at 5 p. m. and two more will be added starting at 7 p. m., for a total of four buses, said Eugene Daley, the event’s chairman.

The buses will pick up people in the Walmart parking lot by the Burger King and then in the Food Lion parking lot by the Goodwill truck before heading to the park, Daley said. The shuttles will also be available to bring people back to their cars after the fireworks end, he added.

This year’s salute will start at 5 p. m. on Sunday in North East Community Park with rubber duckie races run by the Cecil County chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart, pony rides and music from country band Southern Drawl.

The Army National Guard in Elkton will also have a display of military equipment, and the Rotary Club of North East will also have a display of about 100 flags that were purchased by people to honor the veterans in their life. Representatives from the Elkton Vet Center will also be on hand to talk to veterans about any needed resources.

The veterans ceremony will begin at 8 p. m. with the flag raising and Pledge of Allegiance run by an honor guard followed by guest speakers. Then, a combined North East, Elkton and Bohemia Manor high schools band will play patriotic songs before the fireworks launch at around 9: 15 p. m.

The fireworks over the river are back this year after being replaced by a laser show last summer. Part of the reason for the laser show last year was because of a lack of funding and advanced planning that almost saw the event get cancelled. But thanks to almost $ 40,000 in fundraising, the fireworks will return this weekend.
