Elk­ton beats Havre de Grace to ad­vance in Ma­jor Soft­ball

One day af­ter drop­ping a two-run de­ci­sion to Ch­e­sa­peake City, Elk­ton looked to bounce back against Havre de Grace in the first round of the loser’s bracket dur­ing the Dis­trict 5 Ma­jor Soft­ball tour­na­ment on Wed­nes­day.

Elk­ton did just that as it scored in each of the first five in­nings it bat­ted, while pitcher Jil­lian Holmes shut down Havre de Grace in an 11-1, five-in­ning vic­tory to be­come one of the fi­nal four teams in the tour­na­ment.

“We had to tell them to get their fo­cus back af­ter that loss last night be­cause they put their heart into that game. It was a hard­fought game,” Elk­ton man­ager Dan Work­man said. “It took us un­til the third or fourth in­ning to get that fo­cus, but once we did, they


stepped up and had each other’s back.”

Caro­line Miller gave Elk­ton the lead in the bot­tom of the first when she scored on a passed ball, but Havre de Grace tied it in the top of the se­cond when Shakyra Strong scored on the back end of a dou­ble steal.

Elk­ton took con­trol of the game in the bot­tom of the se­cond in­ning with four runs, start­ing when Hanna Work­man scored on a passed ball. Sierra Secor gave Elk­ton a 4-1 lead when she drove in a pair with a sin­gle, and Secor made it a four-run game when she stole home.

Shadai Givens’s hit in the third drove in a pair to give Elk­ton a 7-1 lead, and in the fourth in­ning, Holmes drove in a run with a sin­gle. Au­tumn Simp­son then scored on a passed ball and Work­man plated in an­other with a sin­gle to make it 10-1.

Elk­ton clinched the vic­tory in the fifth in­ning when Secor scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

Holmes picked up the win for Elk­ton as she pitched all five in­nings, giv­ing up one un­earned run on two hits with nine strike­outs, a walk and a hit bat­ter.

“I knew I had to throw as many pitches as I could but also al­low my de­fense to do the work be­hind me,” Holmes said.

Elk­ton ad­vances to face Ris­ing Sun in the se­cond round of the loser’s bracket.

Kar­lie Antonow­icz (dou­ble, walk) and Alisa Doc­tor (dou­ble, two sin­gles) both scored three times and Grace Boyd (two sin­gles), Gath­er­ing John­son (dou­ble, sin­gle) and Sa­man­tha Jaku- bac (sin­gle, walk) all scored twice for Ris­ing Sun, which re­cieved a run scored from Pay­ton Lewis, Kaylin Stafford and Abi­gail McBride.

Cameron McCann, Jaque­line Mari­son and Sid­ney Web­ster all crossed the plate for North East.

Pay­ton Jour­dan score five runs, Kris Gard­ner added three hits and three runs scored and Melissa Savin also crossed the plate three times for Per­ryville, which scored seven runs in the top of the sev­enth to break open a one-run game and punch its ticket to the cham­pi­onship con­test against Elk­ton.

Emily James picked up the win from the cir­cle.

Lauren Caudill had two hits, in­clud­ing a triple and two runs scored for Havre de Grace.

9-10 Soft­ball Dis­trict 5 Tour­na­ment Elk­ton tops Perr yville in four in­nings

Elk­ton de­feated Per­ryville by the 10-run rule in four in­nings on Wed­nes­day af­ter the con­test had been post­poned in the se­cond in­ning the day prior due to rain.

Madein Holmes picked up the win from the cir­cle, throw­ing 11 strike­outs, while at the plate she added a triple and an RBI for Elk­ton, which re­ceived two dou­bles and two RBIs from Car­ley Ester­ling and one RBI each from Lee Ann Pugh, Si­none Foye, Faith White­man and Olivia Secor.

Kayla Brust­man notched three strike­outs over two in­nings and Jo­ce­lyn Reb­man add three more strike­outs over two frames for Per­ryville.

10-11 Base­ball Dis­trict 5 Tour­na­ment Ris­ing Sun 12, Per­ryville 3 (four in­nings)

Jared El­dreth had two dou­bles and one run scored and Luke Trout had one hit and two runs scored, while Layne Hull and Bradley Di­etz both added a dou­ble and one run scored for Ris­ing Sun, which re­ceived a run scored from Justin Mock.

Ben Adams and Gavin Pat­ter­son (two runs) both had a hit, while Hay­den Brooks and Dillon Good­win both scored twice for Ris­ing Sun, which re­ceived a com­plete-game win on the mound from Hull.

Pierce Sponau­gle, Ty Patchell and Jake Berg all had one run for Per­ryville.
