Elkton beats Havre de Grace to advance in Major Softball

One day after dropping a two-run decision to Chesapeake City, Elkton looked to bounce back against Havre de Grace in the first round of the loser’s bracket during the District 5 Major Softball tournament on Wednesday.
Elkton did just that as it scored in each of the first five innings it batted, while pitcher Jillian Holmes shut down Havre de Grace in an 11-1, five-inning victory to become one of the final four teams in the tournament.
“We had to tell them to get their focus back after that loss last night because they put their heart into that game. It was a hardfought game,” Elkton manager Dan Workman said. “It took us until the third or fourth inning to get that focus, but once we did, they
stepped up and had each other’s back.”
Caroline Miller gave Elkton the lead in the bottom of the first when she scored on a passed ball, but Havre de Grace tied it in the top of the second when Shakyra Strong scored on the back end of a double steal.
Elkton took control of the game in the bottom of the second inning with four runs, starting when Hanna Workman scored on a passed ball. Sierra Secor gave Elkton a 4-1 lead when she drove in a pair with a single, and Secor made it a four-run game when she stole home.
Shadai Givens’s hit in the third drove in a pair to give Elkton a 7-1 lead, and in the fourth inning, Holmes drove in a run with a single. Autumn Simpson then scored on a passed ball and Workman plated in another with a single to make it 10-1.
Elkton clinched the victory in the fifth inning when Secor scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.
Holmes picked up the win for Elkton as she pitched all five innings, giving up one unearned run on two hits with nine strikeouts, a walk and a hit batter.
“I knew I had to throw as many pitches as I could but also allow my defense to do the work behind me,” Holmes said.
Elkton advances to face Rising Sun in the second round of the loser’s bracket.

Karlie Antonowicz (double, walk) and Alisa Doctor (double, two singles) both scored three times and Grace Boyd (two singles), Gathering Johnson (double, single) and Samantha Jaku- bac (single, walk) all scored twice for Rising Sun, which recieved a run scored from Payton Lewis, Kaylin Stafford and Abigail McBride.
Cameron McCann, Jaqueline Marison and Sidney Webster all crossed the plate for North East.

Senior Softball District 5 Tournament Perryvile 15, Havre de Grace 6
Payton Jourdan score five runs, Kris Gardner added three hits and three runs scored and Melissa Savin also crossed the plate three times for Perryville, which scored seven runs in the top of the seventh to break open a one-run game and punch its ticket to the championship contest against Elkton.
Emily James picked up the win from the circle.
Lauren Caudill had two hits, including a triple and two runs scored for Havre de Grace.
9-10 Softball District 5 Tournament Elkton tops Perr yville in four innings
Elkton defeated Perryville by the 10-run rule in four innings on Wednesday after the contest had been postponed in the second inning the day prior due to rain.
Madein Holmes picked up the win from the circle, throwing 11 strikeouts, while at the plate she added a triple and an RBI for Elkton, which received two doubles and two RBIs from Carley Esterling and one RBI each from Lee Ann Pugh, Sinone Foye, Faith Whiteman and Olivia Secor.
Kayla Brustman notched three strikeouts over two innings and Jocelyn Rebman add three more strikeouts over two frames for Perryville.
10-11 Baseball District 5 Tournament Rising Sun 12, Perryville 3 (four innings)
Jared Eldreth had two doubles and one run scored and Luke Trout had one hit and two runs scored, while Layne Hull and Bradley Dietz both added a double and one run scored for Rising Sun, which received a run scored from Justin Mock.
Ben Adams and Gavin Patterson (two runs) both had a hit, while Hayden Brooks and Dillon Goodwin both scored twice for Rising Sun, which received a complete-game win on the mound from Hull.
Pierce Sponaugle, Ty Patchell and Jake Berg all had one run for Perryville.
