Cleveland saw its franchise-record 14-game winning streak snapped when Toronto beat the Indians, 9–6, on July 2. The Indians led the AL Central by 5.5 games heading into the games of July 4; they haven’t won the division since 2007. …

Miami picked up 39-year-old reliever Fernando Rodney, who’d given up one earned run in 28.2 innings in San Diego, for 20-year-old right-handed minor leaguer Chris Paddack. Rodney had 17 saves for the Padres this year, but he’ll be the setup man for A.J. Ramos, who’d saved 24 games and posted a sub-2.00 through the end of June. …

Atlanta, meanwhile, dealt Bud Norris (4.22 ERA in 22 games this season) to the Dodgers. The price was a pair of 23-year-old minor league relievers in Phil Pfeifer and Caleb Dirks. The Braves also included 27-year-old minor-league outfielder Dian Toscano, who had signed a four-year, $6 million deal but wasn’t panning out in Class AA. Boston’s efforts to built its future were hampered when MLB announced that the Red Sox would be banned from signing international free agents for a year. MLB determined that the Sox had been circumventing signing bonus rules by signing Venezuelan free agents from the same training program as “package deals,” and also penalized Boston by declaring five of its 2015 teenage signees as free agents.
