Barbara J. Buege

Cecil Whig - - OPINION -

Barbara J. Buege, 69, of Elkton, MD, passed away July 20, 2016 at home with her family, after a courageous battle with cancer. The daughter of the late Donald and Jean ( Whiting) Hook, was born in Midland, Michigan, on August 14, 1946.

Barbara attended Midland High School where she met John A. Buege, who would become her husband. Barbara graduated from Michigan State with a Bachelor’s of Education in 1968. She and John married on June 28, 1968, and Barbara began her teaching career shortly thereafter. Barbara loved to teach, teaching first grade exclusively in Alabama, Michigan, Delaware and Maryland, over a distinguished 20 year career. Barbara was gifted with incredible artistic talent. She spent many hours decorating her classrooms with vibrant book characters she drew herself. She loved music and played guitar and sang folk songs with students and friends all through her life. Health issues resulted in an early retirement from teaching for Barbara, but she found joy in retirement creating art in several mediums including paint, ink and clay.

What Barbara loved most, however, was being a devoted wife and mom. Although Barbara’s adult health issues and subsequent cancer caused her pain and eventually robbed her of the ability to walk, she said that her body enabled her to carry three children and for that, she couldn’t ask for anything more. Barbara fought a valiant 12 year battle with breast cancer with the help of her loving husband and was a testament to strength and grace to her family.

Barbara is survived by her husband, John, as well as daughters Andrea (J.R.) Jarvis of Louisville, KY, and Krista (Henry) Oswald of Elkton, MD; son Tyler (Alpa) Buege of Bel Air, MD; grandchildren Kellyn, Conner, Rylan, Hailey, Gavin and Aman, and sister Deborah (Steve) Kurucz of Myrtle Beach, SC.

A Celebration of Barbara’s Life is planned in the spring in Michigan at the Lake Louise Memorial Garden’s Strong Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s name can be made to Kenmore Elementary PTA, Elkton, MD.
