1 dead, 1 hurt in R.S. crash

— A Penn­syl­va­nia man was killed and his pas­sen­ger was crit­i­cally in­jured Fri­day when they were ejected from a mo­tor­cy­cle on a Ris­ing Sunarea high­way, ac­cord­ing to Mary­land State Po­lice.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors iden­ti­fied the vic­tim as Owen M. Lane, 63, of Peach Bot­tom, Pa., po­lice said. He was pro­nounced dead at the crash scene on Rt. 1 near Con­nelly Road, po­lice added.

An MSP he­li­copter flew his pas­sen­ger, Iona F. Lane, 57, also of Peach Bot­tom, Pa., to Uni­ver­sity of Mary­land’s Shock Trauma Unit in Bal­ti­more, where she ar­rived in crit­i­cal con­di­tion, po­lice re­ported.

Lane was oper­at­ing a 2004 Har­ley David­son mo­tor­cy­cle in the south­bound lane of Rt. 1, head­ing to­ward Con­nelly Road, about 1 p. m. Fri­day when he lost con­trol of his mo­tor­cy­cle, ac­cord­ing to po­lice.

As he ap­proached, a Ford Wind­star driven by Kath­leen N. Neely, 78, of Conowingo, was trav­el­ing on Con­nelly Road head­ing to­ward Rt. 1, po­lice said.

Af­ter stop­ping at the stop sign, po­lice added, Neely pulled across the south­bound lane of Rt. 1 and en­tered the north­bound lane.

At that point, Lane ap­plied the brakes on his south­bound mo­tor­cy­cle, which slid onto its left side af­ter he lost con­trol of it and he and his pas­sen­ger were ejected from the Har­ley, po­lice re­ported.

Lane and his pas­sen­ger came to rest in the south­bound travel lane of Rt. 1, and the mo­tor­cy­cle came to rest on the right shoul­der of south­bound Rt. 1, just south of Con­nelly Road, po­lice said.

Neely pulled to the shoul­der of north­bound Rt. 1 and di­aled 9- 1- 1, po­lice added.

An MSP ac­ci­dent re­con­struc­tion­ist is han­dling the in­ves­ti­ga­tion, which, as of Satur­day af­ter­noon, was on­go­ing, po­lice re­ported.
