Rookie DE Bronson Kaufusi breaks ankle, likely done for year
Will Davis, Kenneth Dixon return to practice
— Bronson Kaufusi’s rookie season could be over just one week into training camp.
The third-round pick of the Baltimore Ravens suffered a broken ankle Thursday, head coach John Harbaugh said after practice.
The injury occurred in a non-contact portion of practice.
“It was in one of our nonlive periods,” Harbaugh said. “One of the other players just fell on his leg. Unfortunately, that happens. You try to avoid that, you do everything you can to keep players off the ground, but sometimes guys fall. That’s what happened to Bronson.”
Harbaugh added: “I’m sure he’ll be out for the year.”
The 6-6, 285-pound defensive end was carted off of the field early in practice.
Kaufusi recorded 11 sacks and 20 tackles for a loss last year at BYU. He finished his college career with 6.5 sacks.
Harbaugh called the injury “tough” for Kaufusi, but added that it could be an opportunity for him to take advantage of.
“That’s part of the game – it’s part of football. It happens for a reason, in my opinion. You’ve got to look at it that way. It’ll be an opportunity for him to take the next year and go to work on his body,” Harbaugh said. “He’s young. He needs a lot of work on his lower body, strength-wise and flexibility-wise. He was playing well, but he’s only going to be better next year. We’ll get him in the weight room, we’ll get him in with our conditioning coaches and he’ll be much better a year from now than he would’ve been this year. He’s just got to look at it that way.”
Cornerback Will Davis returned to practice Thursday after sitting out Monday and Wednesday. Davis suffered his second ACL tear in as many seasons last October.
The Ravens traded for Davis three weeks into last season. He appeared in just two games with Baltimore before suffering the injury.
Harbaugh said Davis was given the days off to rest and he continues to nurse his knee.
Rookie running back Kenneth Dixon was in uniform Thursday but did not take part in any contact drills.
Dixon, the final of Baltimore’s four fourth-round picks, injured his knee in the Ravens’ first training camp practice one week prior. He worked with a trainer, doing ladder and other various drills as the team scrimmaged.
Habaugh said Dixon is “getting close” to a full return.
