Norona, Cook win 2016 Ten­nis Cham­pi­onship

— A pair of Ris­ing Sun ath­letes cap­tured the top prize at the 2016 Ten­nis Cham­pi­onship Tour­na­ment held at Ce­cil Col­lege on Satur­day.

Tara Norona, of Ris­ing Sun, won the ladies cham­pi­onship by win­ning eight out of 12 games in the fi­nal round. She fin­ished hav­ing won 17 of 24 tour­na­ment games.

For­mer Elk­ton high school coach Enid Lum se­cured second place by win­ning seven of 12 games in the fi­nal round. Debbie Bow­man-Pasco, the 2015 cham­pion, fin­ished third. She was fol-


lowed by last year’s run­ner-up, Amber Bur­rell.

Bran­don Cook, also of Ris­ing Sun, won the men’s cham­pi­onship fol­low­ing a closely con­tested fi­nal round. Four players tied in the fi­nal round, with each win­ning six of 12 games.

A round-robin tie-breaker de­ter­mined the fin­ish, with Cook win­ning after he se­cured nine of 12 points. North East’s Ed­die El­burn, the 2015 third-place win­ner, took second place with seven points.

Dar­ren Lantz, the 2013 and 2015 cham­pion, placed third, while Dar­ren Norona came in fourth.
