Norona, Cook win 2016 Tennis Championship
— A pair of Rising Sun athletes captured the top prize at the 2016 Tennis Championship Tournament held at Cecil College on Saturday.
Tara Norona, of Rising Sun, won the ladies championship by winning eight out of 12 games in the final round. She finished having won 17 of 24 tournament games.
Former Elkton high school coach Enid Lum secured second place by winning seven of 12 games in the final round. Debbie Bowman-Pasco, the 2015 champion, finished third. She was fol-
lowed by last year’s runner-up, Amber Burrell.
Brandon Cook, also of Rising Sun, won the men’s championship following a closely contested final round. Four players tied in the final round, with each winning six of 12 games.
A round-robin tie-breaker determined the finish, with Cook winning after he secured nine of 12 points. North East’s Eddie Elburn, the 2015 third-place winner, took second place with seven points.
Darren Lantz, the 2013 and 2015 champion, placed third, while Darren Norona came in fourth.
