ELKTON — Three suspects remained on the loose Thursday after carjacking a pizza delivery worker at gunpoint in an Elkton shopping center a day earlier, police reported.

The incident occurred about 1 p.m. on Wednesday behind Nino’s Pizza in the Village of Elkton shopping plaza in the 800 block of East Pulaski Highway, according to Capt. Joseph Zurolo, an Elkton Police Department spokesman.

“The victim, a delivery driver for Nino’s Pizza, was standing in the rear parking lot next to his vehicle when he was approached from behind by three individuals. As the victim turned around, he observed one of the suspects holding a black in color handgun. The suspect with the handgun demanded the victim hand over his keys to his vehicle,” Zurolo outlined.

After the employee handed over his keys to the gunman, a second robber punched the worker in the face, police said. At that point, police added, the employee ran back into the restaurant – where he watched the threesome flee in his vehicle east in the westbound lane of East Pulaski Highway.

Eyewitnesses told EPD investigators that the robbers continued driving the wrong way down the highway until they reached a portion of road near the Tractor Supply Co. in the 1100 block of East Pulaski Highway, where the vehicle “spun and struck a guardrail,” according to Zurolo. After the vehicle recovered, the driver went into the eastbound lane of East Pulaski Highway and continued toward Delaware, he reported.

EPD alerted Delaware authorities but, as of Thursday afternoon, the trio remained at large and the vehicle had not been recovered.

Investigators have released a surveillance video of three “persons of interest” who were seen in the area of where the carjacking occurred, around the time that it happened, and detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying the three people.

The gunman is described as a black man, about 18 years old, approximately 5’11 with a medium building, last seen wearing a white T-shirt and shorts.

A second suspect is described as a black teen, about 16 years old, approximately 5’8 with a medium build, last seen wearing a white T-shirt and light colored shorts.

The third suspect is described as a “heavyset” black teen, also about 16 years old, last seen wearing a white Tshirt and light shorts.

Anyone with information that might help in this investigation is asked to call Det. Sgt. Andrew Tuer of the Elkton Police Department at 410-398-4200, ext. 35.
