Ruth Grimshaw Conklin

Cecil Whig - - LOCAL & OBITUARIES -

Ruth Grimshaw Conklin, 90, of Wilmington, DE, died on August 5, 2016 at her home at Country House. Ruth grew up in Hollis, NY (Long Island) and was a graduate of Skidmore College (Bachelor of Arts in English, 1947). Her marriage that year to Roger Conklin, a chemical engineer with Dupont, took her initially to Pennsville, NJ, and Wilmington, DE, then later to Geneva, Switzerland, and Akron, Ohio, before returning to Delaware in 1971. Living in Geneva and traveling throughout Europe was the highlight of Ruth’s life. She loved to travel, a passion that led to many exciting adventures for Ruth and Roger, including selling their Wilmington home in 1993 and spending five years roaming the United States and Canada in a 40 foot motorhome. Summers always found them on their island in the North Country of New York State.

Ruth loved nature and gardening. She loved classical music. She was passionate about politics and human rights. She attended church every Sunday that she was able and was a member at Concord Presbyterian Church at the time of her death. Edwards United Methodist (Edwards, NY), Elkton Presbyterian and Red Clay Creek Presbyterian churches were all very important to her.

Ruth was predeceased by her husband Roger in Jan. 2007 and by her son Roger Jr. in Dec. 2004. She is survived by her daughter Judith Barnes and husband John of Wilmington; grandchildren Kelly (Zach) Winters, Annie (Blake) Roof and Mark (Crystal) Conklin, along with their mother, Norma Carey; and great granddaughters Abby, Missy, Lily, Jessica, Ellie and Nora.

Her family is grateful for the loving care the wonderful staff at Country House gave Ruth over the last seven years, and also for the support given by Compassionate Care Hospice.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, August 30, 3 p.m. at Concord Presbyterian Church, 1800 Fairfax Blvd., Wilmington, DE, where friends may call after 2 p.m. A reception in Fellowship Hall will follow the service. Ruth’s ashes will be buried on the family island.
