— The Good Shepherd Catholic School will once again offer a $ 1 million dollar prize for the person who can shoot a hole- in- one in the school’s Sept. 17 golf tournament at Furnace Bay Golf Course.
This is the 10th year for the tournament and the sixth year for the big prize, which spokesman Bud McFadden said has yet to be won.
“Whoever gets closest to the pin at ( hole) No. 10 ... goes back to No. 8,” McFadden said Friday.
The million dollar shot happens after the game is over, he added. Tournament organizers have an insurance policy to pay the prize in the event of a win.
Last year, the tournament raised more than $ 9,000, which the school, on Aiken Avenue, uses for scholarships and school operations.
“We hope to break $ 10,000 this year,” McFadden said.
There are other chances to win for the longest drive and the straightest drive.
Also at the 10th hole is the “Canoe in the Pond.”
“Golfers get three balls for $ 5. If you get the ball in the canoe you win the $ 100 prize,” he explained, noting no one has ever won that challenge either.
“They’ve hit the canoe, but it’s wood and it bounces,” McFadden said.
Entry for the tournament is $ 95. That includes lunch and the hospitality cart, which provides snacks, water, sodas and beer during the game. Tee off is at 9 a. m.
“We’re also looking for sponsors,” McFadden said.
Sponsors get signage along the course for $ 100 each, or two for $ 150. To make sure the sponsors get acknowledged tournament organizers added another competition.
“Players get a paper to list all the sponsors at each hole. At the end the completed papers are entered in a drawing for $ 50,” he said. “We appreciate our sign sponsors. They’re the ones that really help.”
School alumni, families, businesses and individuals are welcome to sponsor a sign, or to host the luncheon or the hospitality cart, he added.
