Police arrest armed robbery suspect
Allegedly robbed North East store
— Social media postings, tips and a search warrant led to the arrest of a man who allegedly robbed a North East convenience store at gunpoint on Sunday night, according to the North East Police Department and Cecil County District Court records.
NEPD Cpl. Stephen Yates, lead investigator, reported that officers captured the suspect, Shawn Adams, 23, of the 300 block of Merry Street in North East, on Thursday night.
Adams stands accused of robbing the Stop & Go at 1 Cecil Ave. about 8:20 p.m. Sunday. Police said he displayed a handgun and demanded cash and cigarettes, then fled on foot after the clerk complied. A surveillance camera videotaped the armed robbery, which helped investigators identify the suspect, police added.
Photos gleaned from that video appeared in the Cecil Whig, and investigators arranged to have them posted on Metro Crime Stoppers’
Facebook page and on other social media sites, according to Yates, who reported that the tactic generated helpful information.
Investigators also received a key tip from a person who indicated that he was related to the suspect, police reported.
“The man came into the North East Police Department and watched the surveillance video. The man said without a doubt that is Shawn Adams. He knew by the way he walked, his facial features, forehead and ears. He has seen Shawn wear shirts (like the one seen) in the video,” court records allege.
That information led to investigators with the Cecil County Sheriff’s Office, Maryland State Police, as well as the NEPD, to conduct a court-approved search of Adams’ residence on Merry Street about 11:15 p.m. on Thursday and finding evidence linking Adams to the armed robbery, according to police.
“During the search (an investigator) found the clothes that were worn during the robbery under Shawn Adams’ bed ... There was also a black handgun located in Adams’ father’s room that matched the handgun used in the robbery,” court records show.
Investigators also found and confiscated a tan bag containing several baggies containing suspected heroin, according to court records.
As investigators prepared to leave the residence after completing the search, Adams arrived at his home and was taken into custody without incident, court records show.
As of Friday afternoon, Adams remained in the Cecil County Detention Center in lieu of $300,000 bond, according to court records, which indicate that he is facing five charges, including armed robbery, theft of less than $1,000 and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony or crime of violence.
