Cham­ber re­cep­tion kicks off elec­tion sea­son

— Ce­cil County’s gen­eral elec­tion sea­son of­fi­cially kicked into gear Thurs­day with a small group of vot­ers show­ing up at Schae­fer’s Ban­quet Hall to rub el­bows and chat with lo­cal can­di­dates.

The event, plugged as a “can­di­dates re­cep­tion” and spon­sored by the gov­ern­ment re­la­tions com­mit­tee of the Ce­cil County Cham­ber of Com­merce, at­tracted about 30 ci­ti­zens.

lic Schools Su­per­in­ten­dent Carl Roberts, who chaired the event, told the au­di­ence he hoped the gath­er­ing would give peo­ple a chance to talk one- on- one with can­di­dates.

“Lo­cal elec­tions are im­por­tant,” he said. “Even though na­tional elec­tions are get­ting all the pub­lic­ity.”

Early vot­ing be­gins Oct. 27 and ends Nov. 3 with elec­tion day fol­low­ing on Nov. 8.

Wayne Tome, the Demo­cratic can­di­date for Ce­cil County Ex­ec­u­tive, said the county needs to be­come more com­pet­i­tive in re­tain­ing its top em­ploy­ees.
