Ravens fire OC Marc Trestman
Quarterbacks coach Marty Mornhinweg fills the vacancy
The Baltimore Ravens have fired offensive coordinator Marc Trestman, head coach John Harbaugh announced Monday morning.
Quarterbacks coach Marty Mornhinweg will replace Trestman.
“After very careful consideration, I have decided to make a change to our offensive coaching staff and have replaced Marc Trestman with Marty Mornhinweg as offensive coordinator for the rest of the season,” Harbaugh said in a statement released by the organization. “My obligations are to the team, the organization and the fans to be the very best team we can be. Today we find ourselves one game out of the division and conference lead after experiencing two tough losses at home. We will work to be better in every aspect of our football team. Our expectations are high, and we look forward to fulfilling them.”
The move comes one day after a 16-10 home loss to Wahsington on Sunday. The Ravens’ offense fell flat after its opening drive, in which Baltimore marched 75 yards down field behind a balanced mix of run and pass for a touchdown. The Ravens (3-2) managed just a single field goal the rest of the game.
Baltimore found early success running the ball, but ran just eight run plays in the final three quarters. Running back Terrance West averaged 8.6 yards per carry Sunday, but only ran the ball 11 times.
Harbaugh and quarterback Joe Flacco both expressed frustration with the offensive struggles following the game.
Trestman was in his second season as offensive coordinator in Baltimore. He replaced Gary Kubiak, who left to become head coach of the Denver Broncos.
“I appreciate and respect the efforts and contributions Marc has made to the team since his arrival,” Harbaugh said. “Marc is a good person and an excellent football coach.”
Mornhinweg will be Flacco’s fifth offensive co- ordinator in nine seasons, following Cam Cameron, Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell, Kubiak and Trestman. Cameron, like Trestman, was fired one day after the Ravens lost to Washington in 2012. He was replaced by Caldwell and the Ravens went on to win the Super Bowl.
Morhinweg was last the offensive coordinator of the New York Jets (201314). He held that position with the Philadelphia Eagles (2004-12) and the San Francisco 49ers (19972000). Mornhinweg spent two seasons (2001-02) as head coach of the Detroit Lions.
