— The library parking lot will close again on Monday and re-open in December as work continues on the first two of three planned phases of renovations.
The parking lot was initially suppose to be closed for all of August and September before re- opening in October. But while the majority of the parking lot did open the first week of October, the lot will close again next week for repairs and paving, said Frazier Walker, Cecil County
Public Library community relations specialist.
As when the parking lot was closed before, the librar y will remain open and patrons can still walk or take Cecil Transit to the branch. The library will continue with the reduced hours schedule it has had since August, opening from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10 a. m. to 5 p. m. on Friday and Saturday.
The branch’s external book drop will also be re- located to the front entrance of the YMCA and any items checked out at the Elkton branch will have extended due dates. Cecil College Elkton Station will also be hosting some of the branch’s children’s programs during the construction, Walker said.
“We thank our patrons for their continued patience,” she said.
The project initially called for the renovations to be completed in two phases. The first phase, which was to take place during August, included installing a solar canopy in the parking lot to generate energy and provide shaded parking as well as adding two electric vehicle charging stations.
The second phase, which was slated for September, included stormwater management updates, the addition of a right turn exit lane, re- paving and re- striping the lot and making improvements to the drive- through book drop.
Those who have passed by the library in the last few weeks will have noticed the solar canopy that has already been erected in the parking lot. In addition to providing shade, the canopy will also have solar panels on top to generate energy.
All these renovations will lay the groundwork for the library to add 100 additional parking spots in 2018 when the new Gilpin Manor Elementary School opens next door. A groundbreaking ceremony for the school is scheduled for next week and once the project is completed, the Gilpin Manor and library parking lots will be joined to allow for more library parking in overflow situations.
While the parking lot is closed, CCPL is recommending that patrons direct their holds to other branches and use other full- service locations. Walker also noted that the library’s eBooks, website and other digital resources are available 24/ 7.
