George Save­rio Ponzo

George Save­rio Ponzo, 87, of Ris­ing Sun, MD, passed away on Mon­day, Oc­to­ber 17, 2016 at Heart­land Hospice.

Born in New York City, he was the son of the late An­gelina DeNis­cio and Vin­cent John Ponzo. He was 1946 grad­u­ate of Haver­ford High School and was a vet­eran of the SV Btry 271st FA Bn of the United States Army, where he was awarded the World War II Vic­tory and Army of Oc­cu­pa­tion-Ja­pan Medals. Prior to his re­tire­ment, he was a crane op­er­a­tor and op­er­at­ing en­gi­neer of the I.U.O.E Lo­cal #542, Philadel­phia, PA. He worked for Cor­nell & Com­pany on projects at the Ori­ole Park at Cam­den Yards, and Lib­erty Tower in Philadel­phia.

He was a mem­ber of Good Shep­herd Ro­man Catholic Church in Per­ryville, MD, where he served as an usher and main­te­nance min­istry to the parish. In his re­tire­ment, he played Se­nior Base­ball for leagues in Delaware County, PA, as short stop. He was known for his per­sonal ac­com­plish­ment of con­struc­tion of his own home in Conowingo, MD.

In ad­di­tion to his late par­ents, he was pre­ceded in death by his broth­ers, Robert and Joseph Ponzo. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Lewis Ponzo of 63 years of mar­riage, his two daugh­ters, Anne Ponzo Hilde­brand of York, PA and Laura Ponzo aka Laura Ponzo DiSa­batino of Wilm­ing­ton, DE; his four grand­chil­dren, Joshua and Ja­cob Hilde­brand, Rachael and John DiSa­batino; his sis­ter, Lu­cille P. Ricucci of Wilm­ing­ton, DE.

A me­mo­rial ser­vice will be held on Satur­day, Oc­to­ber 22, 10 a.m. at the Good Shep­herd Parish, 810 Aiken Ave., Per­ryville, MD 21903, where friends will be re­ceived from 9 a.m. un­til the time of ser­vices. In­ter­ment will be pri­vate and held at the con­ve­nience of the fam­ily.
