Rising Sun seeks candidates for town board vacancy

— Following the resignation of Commissioner Joseph Shephard, Mayor Travis Marion is in-
viting people interested in the vacancy on the town’s board of commissioners to step forward.
Shephard resigned Oct. 1, citing a change in his work status that would make it impossible for him to participate in Rising Sun’s government. Shephard was just elected in October 2015 along with Commissioner Brian Leishear in the town’s first fall election, and the first in the cycle of four- year terms.
According to Rising Sun’s charter, the mayor selects the candidate and brings a name before the commissioners for approval.
“It’s a group decision, not just mine,” Marion said.
Prior to Shephard, the last commissioner to resign was George Walker, who did so a few months ahead of the October 2015 election. The board opted to wait for voters to choose his successor.
As of Thursday, Marion said he had received no response.
A year ago, Commissioner Joe Shephard took the oath of office from Cecil County Clerk of the Circuit Court Charlene Notarcola. Now Mayor Travis Marion is in search of candidates to take Shephard’s seat on the board.
